We like antique tractors and farm equipment over here. This weekend is our annual threshing bee and antique tractor show. This is one of our prized steam traction engines. They were very good at breaking sod on the vast prairies of the Midwest.

Same machine. I kinda like the semi-silhouette effect I got.

They were very good at breaking sod on the vast prairies of the Midwest. In the UK, our trains virtually looked like that when I was a kid!! I used to be given rides on steam rollers where I lived whenever they were fixing or laying pavements. I got to love the smell of steam and hot tar.

Fall is soon upon us at Minnesota Hill. The wheat has been harvested and my renter is doing the fall plowing. Yes, those are triples on the tractor. We have very soft and often wet ground over here.

Opening day of deer season in Minnesota. The Sun is rising over the swamp, while a light fog hangs over the fields. I usually miss these beautiful morning shots, as I usually leave for work before sunrise.

Blimey ...... proper snow!!!! It's gone very mild here. Up to 12c today. I'm going out tonight with the chiminea I think, if there's nothing on tv. Drinks on the balcony don't you know. That kind of snow would bring the UK to a standstill!! Whenever it snows in the south of the UK, everything goes stupid for a week. We don't get that much snow really. Lucky to get a full week of it in recent years. Mind you, even the trains stop when the leaves fall of the trees.

I was a tiny bit apprehensive going to work this morning. My 4WD pickup is in the shop, nursing some deer damage, so I'm borrowing my folks' minivan for the week. 8 miles of unplowed, drifted gravel roads, scraping the belly the whole way, hoping the front end stays planted good enough to keep traction, before I hit plowed pavement.
At least I got the driveway cleared yesterday. My tractor-mounted snowblower is an indispensable asset, out in the boonies.
More snow coming tonight.

Is it early this year in Canada? I saw a YouTube video with buses and cars going all over the place in a town. Even a police car skidding around the place. Looks like they weren't prepared for snow and that's unlike Canada.
In the U.K., cars just don't hold and most people don't even change their tyres. We don't get enough to worry down in the south but when it comes, it's chaos.

Snow is actually quite late this year. We had an unusually long, warm fall (Indian summer) so no one was even thinking snow. When it finally came, it was preceded by freezing rain, which gave a nice, slick base of ice under the snow. Fortunately that melted off rather quickly, followed by another week or two of unseasonably warm weather. What you see in the picture is what I would call our first real winter snow, and it's here to stay. Low temperatures tonight are expected to be around -10f/-23c, with tomorrow's high around 2f/-16c. Welcome to winter in Minnesota/Canada!

I should also add that Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North Dakota are experiencing a huge winter storm that shuts down everything. 20"+ of snow, dangerously high winds and sub-zero temperatures make for seriously life threatening conditions. 300 miles of interstate highways are completely shut down. Nothing can prepare you for these Midwest prairie storms. Stay home and ride it out.
What we got was nothing but a nice, gentle snowfall, and I'm just fine with that!
