I came across this curious little IEM last week. It has a strange design but doesn't sound too shabby considering that it's a cheap earpiece. Checking on the Internet I have found that it might be a copy of an old JVC design. Compared to modern iem's it does look a bit clunky but if it sounds okay who cares?
Basically, in each Capsule there are two drivers. One driver takes care of the bass while the other takes care of the treble and mids. Because the capsules contain two drivers it does look like two barrels stuck together with the pads on one end. I guess the theory is that once you separate the bass and the treble, then you should get a clearer sound.
In spite of the bowls being quite large they do actually fit quite well into the ear.
I switched between the Sennheiser ie8 and the Soundmagic es50s in order to try and hear what differences having two drivers for each ear might make.
Actually, the bass does seem slightly clearer or at least separate from the rest due to it coming from its own driver. The treble in comparison is a little bit more strident thanthe other two iems. I do think that there is some kind of mid bass hump there but it doesn't interfere much with the rest of the frequency response to be honest.
It's not a brilliant iem, but for the price it really isn't that bad at all. In fact I quite like them. Bass has a nice punch that the other two don't seem to have. I can see that someone might have trouble with the quality of the treble though, which is quite a bit forward compared to the others. I think that there is some kind of hump in the frequency response in the lower treble area. This does have the effect of making speech very clear though.
So, for a general-purpose IEM, they really aren't that bad for the money. The biggest problem might be in getting hold of them since I think that the retailer is in China and that there isn't a European outlet. So if you order them direct you're going to have a two week wait in order to get them but they are fairly cheap for what you're getting and since they're so cheap, there probably won't be any import tax slapped on top of the price.
Having said that there are cheap, I have noticed that on Amazon they are going at a daft price in the UK. On eBay or probably via the US site I think they can be had for around £35. Mine were in Barcelona.
