I use streaming services to hear new albums first before buying them Gordon. Or else I'd end up with everything!!

Well, my trial of Sonarworks ran out the other day and to be honest my HD 650's sounded crap without it. I couldn't bring myself to listen to them any more. Val took pity on me & bought me the full version as an early birthday present. Karma has been restored. On top of that, I'm now running with the HD 650 'No Limits' profile in Sonarworks. This post explains what that's all about. At first I couldn't hear any appreciable improvement. It was different, certainly. But better? I didn't think so. Then I played Last Days of Gravity by Younger Brother and I'll be damned. The bottom end is wonderful now. There's a further tweak that can be implemented via EQ but I haven't tried it as yet. I'll keep you all posted.

I found the very same when the Kameleon went back to Frans, Gordon. No longer wanted to listen to the hd650!!
Got one of my own on the way soon though, so the hd650 will return......
It's a pig when the trial runs out. Then you have to make a choice ... Is it worth paying for or can you do without. It is amazing how different the hd650 sounds without eq isn't it as well?
The HF thread makes me laugh with all of those posters saying how wonderful it is, without having ever heard it with proper bass and that hump smoothed away.
Once a track goes right down to the 20 - 40 hz range, you really know it as well!!! That 'no limits' response will really make it take off and will have you looking for revordings with proper depth. That's what the Kameleon did for me.

Well, in stock form it is wonderful, if only for not being peaky like most other headphones but you're right, once they're EQ'ed there's no going back. Have you tried the Sonarworks plug-in? Have you tried the 'No Limits' profile? This really is something else. On top of this I'm now using an low-shelf filter at 15Hz of 4dB gain and a Q of 1.41. The bass now goes through the floor and without any bleed into the upper bass at all. Outstanding!

No, I haven't had the no limits option, Gordon since I didn't buy it. For me, they sound quite skewed after hearing them eq'd. I was very sad to send the Kameleon back to Frans since it wrecked the hd650 for me!!!
It also changed what I regard as essential bass. That sub bass is something that not many headphones produce at all well. It changes your outlook on headphones imo and I think many don't realise what a proper sub bass actually is. It also points out those recordings that have none, I found heavily compressed tracks to consist mostly of 'middle' information with raised mid bass.
My favourite sound is the hd650 with EQ, but in my case, it was with a Kameleon. It's really astonishing. You've found an alternative solution.

I think they might be pretty close, Simon. The one thing that makes the Kameleon different is the fact that it can use any source and not just a computer. There are also two versions, a portable ome (or more portable because it's fairly large) and a desk top version. Both now have a volume control as well and can drive pretty high i,pedance headphones nicely. Sonarworks ties you to a computer but works much the same way except you need an amp or dac/amp to follow.

i am a tad confused now. i thought the upcoming unit would be a standalone filter that i could connect to any amp, ie my Ember. from what you are saying Ian , its an amp as well.
i have obviously got the wrong end of the stick.

The Kameleon is an amp. Jeremy hasn't produced pure filters yet.
The Kameleon comes as a portable unit or desk top unit.
At the moment, the pure filter units for Ember/Polaris or any other amp aren't in production yet. Having said that, the Kameleon might be able to provide a line out which could go into another amp. Frans will be able to clarify.

Hi Simon. Am I right in thinking you're using Foobar on a Windows machine?
