'fraid so Ian. When I said I was done buying headphones I forgot to add the 'almost' at the end
Although I think I qualified that by saying no more serious purchases but that I'd still by the odd fun headphone now and then. And I'm with you when you say the 1A meets Frans' criteria for a fun headphone.
I suppose it is a bit like the D2K. My initial thoughts were a closed back DT990 but with a bit less treble quantity.
The 1A definitely goes deeper than the Momentums and has quite good punch to it. The thing that really surprised me is just how spacious it sounds and the Momentum 1.0 sounds positively boxy by comparison. Although the Momentum is perhaps a bit more 'hi-fi' sounding and I think does mids better.
Plugged straight into the ipod touch the bass did seem quite boomy, the mids a bit held back and the highs somewhat thin. Amping them with either the Mojo or Polaris improves this 'phone quite a bit as the bass sounds more controlled with less boom, vocals come to fore a bit more and the treble really doesn't do much wrong. Seems to shine when you feed it good quality recordings and has a nice smooth presentation.
It's very good for films too. I watched Southpaw last night and it was brilliant. Really quite an immersive experience and the 1A added suitable weight to the soundtrack (a couple of bass heavy and fast flowing Eminem tracks in particular).
I don't think this headphone needs modding. I like the bass as is and don't think I'd actually want to lessen it and as you say modding may affect sensitivity which wouldn't be great with something like an ipod or mobile.
The Superlux looks interesting too. £30 for a full sized headphone is mad really, particularly if it can be modded to sound as good as some costing much more. If there is such a thing as a pocket money headphone purchase I suppose this might be one.
