yes mate. purely on the micro now. in jriver's "device settings" for the ifi wasapi driver there is a setting for "open device for exclusive access". (this works fine). when using the aiso driver instead , there is no such setting i can find in the "device settings". using this i can play other things like youtube over the top of my jriver playback.
there must be something i have missed. its not a biggy as wasapi works perfectly well. i'm just annoyed i cant find it!

It must be an ASIO thing because I get a different set of options from WASAPI too. Like you no apparent option to enable or disable exclusive mode.
Although in my case it looks like it automatically goes into exclusive mode because whilst youtube videos will stream video there is no audio output. Are you getting concurrent audio feeds with the Micro?

ASIO is exlusive by default thus there is no such option for it. If you select it and can get JRiver and another app to sound at the same then ASIO in you case isnt working as it should.

I haven't Simon. I use HQ Player which is exvellent. Also Foobar. (Apart from the excellent Fiios that I have)
The amp that you were looking at with crossfeed got me going because it was very tweakable with regards to speaker angle and amounts of crossfeed. I really liked the old Meier unit because you could vary it and also give a little bass boost with variations in order to compensate for subjective bass loss with the crossfeed. Mine was pinched and you can't get them any longer, but they were extremely good.

I tried the demo of HQ Player last night.
Managed to get DSD working but it took a bit of playing about with.
It's not exactly intuitive but looks very capable and there are loads of different things to tweak....if you know what you are doing.
Not exactly cheap though is it??? £120!!
It almost feels like that if you could take the relative simplicity and interface of JRiver and add in some of the functionality of HQ Player you'd quite possibly be able to have your cake and eat it too.

Looking at CPU usage you really see how CPU intensive DSD playback is.
Using the Chord DSD 256 freebie tracks on my relatively capable PC (i5-4570 + 16gb DDR3 ram + GTX 970 which has CUDA cores HQ Player utilises I think) I was seeing something like 35% CPU usage with nothing else running. Swap playback to a 16/44 FLAC file and that drops usage down to a mere 3 or 4%.

Looking at CPU usage you really see how CPU intensive DSD playback is. . Exactly. I bought a cheap computer for Music and photo manipulation and it wasn't until Javier introduced me to dsd files that I realised just how much it takes out of the system. My computer plays back very hi res at slow motion, so I have to back off the quality a bit. In any case, I'm not that keen on using a computer for music and much prefer separate players using line out or digital out. Just a bit more convenient and gets you away from computer crashes or viruses. Great when they work, but a nightmare if everything goes down. Having said that, the Ifi is absolutely superb sounding from the computer.

That's a very good point about computers Ian. It was only when my last one started playing up that I realised just how snookered I was in terms of music listening. The mobile to IEMs is okay but not quite the same as a dedicated desktop set up. Same thing again the other night when Qobuz's servers went down. What now? Thankfully I had some hi-res files stored on my HDD to help me weather the storm. In terms of DSD I'm finding that some CPU grunt and RAM definitely helps. The ipod struggles a bit but the Z2 is actually not too bad at all (using USBAPP) as long as I'm only listening and not doing much else. Could be the extra RAM (3gb vs 1gb) also helps the Z2. I didn't realise that playback could actually slow down though! Just assumed it would stutter. That sounds a bit like the analogue days when you could mess around with tape speeds or RPM

It also depends on how you're sending the dsd files out to your dac, Simon. If you set everything on the computer to as high res as possible, you might possibly see a difference. Mine does the 'analogue' trick that Mark described for me when going uo too high so I have to actually lower the output until the files sound ok on HQ Player.
As someone said earlier, it's not user friendly and I was lucky to have a remote set up done for me........
