Did anyone else take up the k553 from Massdrop a little while ago?
I have one and I do think that they slightly improved on the K550 with it.
I do have some reservations about quality control with AKG though since I have two k545's and they sound quite different. One doesn't focus in the centre and it was like this from the start. It's like having two drivers on your ears but sounds don't seem to come from one place.
The K550 was another that I had issues with since I bought loads of them for students of mine, doing music technology. I bought some at a later date and found that they were more mellow than mine which was burned in etc. Result was I got another one for myself.
The K553 is a K550 in effect, but it is actually slightly more mellow. Not quite as sharp in the top and an extremely well focused bass. Not a big bass, but does go low given the chance.
I'm curious whether anyone else went for one. It's not a bad headphone actually and seems like a slightly more grown up K550.......,,

A bit of thread necromancy here, but I just had a chance to listen to a K553 that belongs to a friend of my Daughter.
Best I can do is compare them to my K7XX.
The one word I would use to describe these is Bright! Much brighter than the K7XX. Not necessarily painfully so, but I would still prefer to reduce the 9k spike a bit.
The mids are very smooth, without any glaring spikes that I'm immediately aware of. In fact, the K553 sounds smoother than the K7XX without any EQ. Vocals are very clear.
Bass is tight and nicely balanced with the rest of the sound, but not quite as big or deep as the K7XX.
Overall, a very nice listen. In the end, I would stick with the K7XX for serious at home listening, but the K553 would be fine travel cans.
