The new album is soon to be released and from what I've heard, it's a bit underwhelming. Old style blues and what sounds like 'easy listening'. Quite a few of the 'old boys' are producing albums that really don't impress too much tbh. Elton John did the same. Very mediocre and 'couldn't really care less' material imo.
Looks like the old Eric has faded away and he's walking the old blues route without the depth of someone like Robert Cray. He just doesn't do it for me and this isn't a great listen.
It's due out around the 20th I think but I'm quite disappointed frankly.

I noticed this was on Qobuz so had a quick listen and it really is utterly generic and forgettable pap.
If there is a retirement home for aging legends then Eric and Elton need checking in. Whilst not exactly my cuppa with Blackstar Bowie showed that you can grow old and still produce something that is meaningful and actually matters.

Absolutely. Even his singing sounds unconvincing. Weak and almost as though he's doing covers in the background.

That's too bad. He's put out some good work in the past. I guess everyone gets tired at one point or another... except for Buddy Guy. Saw him a couple summers a and he still sings and plays hard.

'I'll be Alright' sounds to me like 'We Shall Overcome Some Day'.
I'm not at all keen on this album. I love the way that the internet describes it as sensational! It actually put me to sleep today.
Guess the words .....
'Somebody's knockin' ...........'
Somebody whispered ...........'
Answers .....
At my door. In my ear.
The album sounds like a pensioners' party and is so predictable. I keep waiting for 'She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah'!

I'm listening to this again to see if I was a bit harsh and I suppose I was. But it's just so damn pleasant and inoffensive. Not something I want in a rock or blues album.
Qobuz have this to say: "like a fine wine, the 71-year old legend continues to evolve, adding tasty notes and nuances to an already well-stocked palette". I just don't hear it. I mean he even calls in Ed Sheeran to cameo with him on one of the tracks. If that's not an indication of a man treading water creatively I don't know what is.
Half the tracks remind me of a guy kicking back on his porch on a warm summer's evening strumming on his guitar. The bluesier numbers are more akin to a jobbing musician down the local pub.
It's competent for sure but he simply doesn't have the vocal strength for the blues nor can he inject any real emotion into the tracks. Ultimately there's just no 'spark'.

Oh and the 'She loves you' comment is spot on Ian. There was one song I thought he sounded like modern day McCartney and that's not exactly a compliment. He can go to the home too....who's next?
