I have an Ember II tube headphone amp & a Little Dot Mk IV se headphone amp & both have preamp out jacks. I would like to get tubes into my main stereo & wonder if it is advisable to use one of these amps as a pre amp feeding my power amp. I realize that I will have to set my volume levels so as not to exceed 1V out of the tube amps, but I was wondering whether, other than having a greater than 1V output, are these designes markedly different than a unit designed to be used just as a pre amp? The LD has an output Z of 600 Ohms, so that should be OK. Not aure about the Ember. Anyway, any insight on this subject is appreciated. kev

I can't get into the technical side of things but I can say that I have been using my Ember as a preamp for a very long time. No issues on my end. I use it in conjuction with a early 70's Pioneer amp.

Just have to make sure & be aware that it can put out more than 1V at the preamp out. Kev

Not sure that you have to measure the voltage, the volume control will define things well enough. My dac outputs 2.1 volts. My passive volume control attenuates that. The ember will keep the voltage attenuated with the volume control as well. It does for me.

I'm using my ember in this way & have been for nearly two years now with no problems. Stick the Ember to 50% volume and go for it.
