Apart from different ear canal shapes and head shapes etc, I'm not sure, but I'm also starting to think that what you get from a headphone can also depend on where you are.
Having just got back from Florida, I took headphones with me and bringing them back, they now sound different imo in comparison to Florida. (Also on the plane)Differences are the temperature, humidity and height above sea level. (Actually at sea level!!) I noticed a big difference when I went to the Scilly Isles on a 12 seater plane. There was no pressurisation and headphones had very little bass on board.
I only used my Sony on the plane and not around the place in Florida. On the plane, it was absolutely stunning. No big bass but real clarity. Films were crstal clear, where my wife couldn't hear dialogue at all. She used sub titles. They really work well in a plane and perhaps lose a little of their natural 'bloom' that I hear at home.
The V-Moda was even more dramatic. (Maybe because I'm less familiar with it at the moment)In Florida, It had a massive bass with mids sucked away and a peak up top which I noticed sometimes on speech in particular. At home, it seems way more balanced. Slightly less huge bass and more in the mids. In Florida, I felt the need to play them loud when they took off. Here, this morning, low volume was stunningly clear and fulfilling. I'm beginning to get more repect for the m-100.
This does make me wonder, in the minutia of hifi, are we hearing different things sometimes because we are at different heights/humidity/temperature, let alone our own 'mood'? I know that I can be quite sensitive to some small changes that my wife doesn't hear but the difference in sound that I was getting in Florida compared to home is quite large.
I prefer the sound I'm getting at home ..... is that because I'm 'attuned' to this air pressure?
As far as the V-Moda goes, I'm going to directly compare with the Momentums in their various guises (Since the on ears sound very different to over ears)and with the Sony mdr 1a. Maybe comparative reviews are better than single reviews because of this? I have a different outlook on the V-Moda at home now which I can't really explain. Changes aren't massive, but to me, they've become more balanced. Or maybe head 'burn in'?
Sound is such a difficult thing to describe.......
