Okay, I finally did it. I joined the Massdrop on the K7XX red edition. It was just to sexy not to. It should ship on October 10.
I figure since I'm used to Grado levels of bass and I've lived with the treble peak, these should be sonic Nirvana.

I'm thinking at 62 ohms, my Project Starlight should be a good match for these, as that's right where the output power seems to be the highest. Hoping for good synergy.

I think that they may be based on the k712 Joe. If they are, they are excellent. Warmer than Grados and much more spacious sounding.
My k553 Massdrop was also a great buy. They seem to be doing some good deals with AKG.

I was going to take a look at the drop but accidentally typed in massdroop.com. Sounds like a support group for middle aged men such as myself...fortunately it couldn't find a match as I suspect the pics wouldn't have been pleasant Have owned both but not at the same time and my recollection is that they are very similar. Some say the K7XX is a 're-badged' K712 others the K702 Pro Anniversary. To my ears (& unreliable memory) the K712 had a bit more sparkle / air up top and perhaps a bit better bass extension but also sounded a touch leaner/brighter. The K7XX I recall being a bit fuller / smoother / musical but there's really not a lot in it at all tbh. Both play nicely with tubes and pick up the characteristics well so you should be able to 'tweak' the sound to your liking. I'm sure Jeremy has a pair too so if you need some tube recommendations he'd likely be able to suggest some good 'uns that won't break the bank.

K702 doesn't have the same depth of bass as the k712. I have both, but the difference could be perhaps pads? The K702 pads are quite hard. The k712 is a really smooth listen and quite un-AKG like really. It goes down quite a long way - at least that's what my ears are telling me, where the K702 needs Heineken to get down there.

Sorry. I meant to say K702 (65th) Anniversary rather than Pro.
The gel pads do definitely change the way the AKGs sound. Have seen it claimed that the K712 is just the Q701 (or Q702?) with gel pads fitted and a new lick of paint.

Whether Anni or 712, either way, they go way down past anything the Grado can hope to achieve. The rest of the FR should be silky smooth by comparison. I think I'll like it. My wife told me, "Happy anniversary."

I've found with some solid state amps that they can get a touch more aggressive but tubes really smooth them out. I think Ian and I have spoken about this before and we both find the K712 more Senn-like (HD6xx) than AKG in its tuning and the K7XX is no different.
To me the K7XX sounded a lot like my old HD600 but with better extension both ends. Mids and timbre perhaps not quite so magical (no shame in that) but very very good none-the-less.

Very swish! When I bought my pair you could choose any colour you liked so long as it was (all) black...just like old cars I suppose

That looks posh. Mine is oranage and black. I really like it a lot actually. It's a good, subtle listen.
K553 is also a very good headphone. What surprised me was seeing it in Orlando in the Guitar Center there. They're now being sold in normal shops, not just via Massdrop. In fact, it's a pretty good matching headphone with the k712 for closed listening. Slightly more mellow than the original k550.
Compared to my mdr7, they're both positively warm; especially the k712!!!

Boo, fixed cable That's the big drawback on my K550, I'll be modifying that soon, but really, at this price level, fixed cables? When will manufacturers learn.

Yes, a fixed cable isn't great when you're paying K550/3 money. The ones that really got me though were the original versions of the Beyerdynamic T1 and T5p!!

Actually, a detachable lead on the k553 would have made sense. I'd have used it mobile!!
