Looks sensible and makes them smoother, I'm guessing?
If you like the AKG K7xx sound, the MSR7 might also suit you well for mobile. I'm enjoying the one that I borrowed very much. Stereo placing seems more solid on the Audio Technica in comparison to the AKG's which are so widely spaced that the central image can become a bit unfocused imo. I have no idea why that is.

I've attempted to smooth out some more of the wiggles in the sound, using some of the published FR plots. I really like this one. Can't say how it measures, of course, but I love how it sounds.

It's been another month, and another tweak. Actually, I made the changes a good three weeks ago and am very happy. I was a bit annoyed that I could only use EasyQ with Foobar, but nothing else, so I went back to playing with the headphone damping. (Mind you, nothing is horribly wrong with the sound, just very minor voicings.) I used some scrap craft felt to make some rings the same size as the stock foam. I settled with three rings per side in place of the foam. The peakiness is gone, (For my ears!) and it still maintains enough of the top end to sound crisp, but less fatiguing amd plastiky than stock. The 3k dip seems to have evened out a bit as a result of smoothing out the peaks. As a result, the vocals no longer sound as recessed as they did.
All very subtle, yet noticable improvements. I'm guessing the K712 would yield very similar results, as most people tend to think they sound virtually identical.
Am I done? Time will tell.

Interesting. Even it does have velours it does not give help with the 3.5-4 kHz dip.

Nice. Any chance you getting a pair of HE4xx to trial too? Then we can have a 3-way Massdrop smackdown between the k7xx, HD58x, and HE4xx (or maybe 4-way of you want to toss in the HD6xx)

Is this the same as the K712, just red color accents? I'm sure someone mentioned something to this respect, but I forgot.

@ Miiksu The 4kHz dip is MUCH smaller (perhaps even not there) and seems fully compensated acc. to K712 measurements of Rtings. Below the difference between a measurement without an artificial ear (horizontal line) and with (blue trace). see plot: www.rtings.com/headphones/1-2/graph#327/2069It shows a +10dB peak between 3kHz and 5kHz due to Pinna action and the 'dip' between 1kHz and 3kHz also seems to be filled in. Still, it sounds closer to my measurements (when comparing it with Sennheisers) than to those from Rtings. The truth is propbably somewhere in between. @ Mr Trev No chance of getting a HE400i I reckon unless someone sends it to me. I think the HE400i will measure quite similar. @ shiro I suspect the K7XX is a K712 with a foam ring added. Remove the foam disc on a K7XX and you have a K712. Add a foam ring (or 1mm thick felt ring) and you have a K712.

solderdude Yep. The dips are not that big sometimes. The caps are not so bad always they look on the measurements. I may overreacted a little.

I've also read that the k7xx is basically the same as the k702 anniversary edition - which I think was supposedly the same as the 712. There was a massive discussion on HF when they were released as to which version they sounded most like. That was a long time ago…

Nice to finally see some 7XX measurements from your rig, Frans. I can't imagine it's been easy to find a set in Europe.
They really are quite enjoyable.

I have always suspected the K7XX was the K702 Anniversary edition, in a triple black suit. It’s a much less bright headphone than the other K7__’s, I would say it’s on par with the signs to re of a Senn HD650, but with the huge AKG Soundstage.
I haven’t listened to the K712, but I don’t doubt the only difference is various uses of acoustic materials like foams to create slight variances in FR & overall timbre/feel. Didn’t know the K712 used a new pad material, and am now interested to hear my K7XX with the extra foam removed, with K712 gel pads on lol
