Thanks for the comprehensive list. It would be pretty much impossible to constantly maintain and update such a list (and that was not my request - sorry if i wasn't clear about that) . My intent was to just call out a few relative safe choices for a neutral or well balanced sound.
A safe entry point into the Sennheiser lineup is HD558 at around $90 (the rest of HD5XX open models are only minor upgrades and it would be better to switch straight to 600/650/800 for a significant upgrade).
NAD Viso HP50 - this can be called neutral(ish) with a slight bit of emphasized bass, but otherwise very evenly balanced throughout. Unfortunately, I found these uncomfortable (the headband is poorly shaped creating a hotspot at the top, and the pads were too small). There is a new model, HP70 coming along, which hopefully fixes the ergonomics problem.
Mr.Speakers' original headphones aim for neutral sound and generally succeed depending on revision, but they are all way too expensive (and very comfortable).

I am sure you will not regret it! My HD650 and HE400i have been in the drawer since I got mine filtered :-)

having my first listen to hd800 on Kameleon. sounding really good, but i have to say, i also like the stock sound. to me and my music they dont sound shy in the bass. is it possible that my aging ears are immune to the treble spike too? either way, great sound

The treble spike is not always 'nasty' sounding. For me it triggers Tinnitus so want to get rid of it. Part of the elevated treble is responsible for the 'hyper details'. When your ears are so aged the 6kHz is already attenuated then you must almost be completely deaf.
Don't worry though. The HD800 is sold a LOT and many people like it as it is. To me there is too much treble and subbass is lacking. Bass sounds good and tight 'stock' just lacking slight in body.
People expect the Kameleon to make it a bass monster. It doesn't. On some music you may not even hear the effect in the lows (a bit like with the HD650) but when you play some Shpongle or something else with subbass you will hear the difference.

Pop is a mixed bag. Sometimes the treble just drills a hole in my ears. I have to take them off immediately, and switch to another headphone or it can sometimes kick my tinnitus in too. What I get for growing up in a time when we shot guns without hearing protection. For me the thing is very dependent on the recording. Kameleon is on its way today. I'll let you know my impressions after I spend some time getting used to the new presentation. I'll be sure to give it a try with recordings I know don't play nice with the stock 800. Enjoy your Kameleon. Try some Shpongle.

That was my first impression too when I listened to them for the first time. But when I switched back and forth to my (filtered) He400i, I noticed that the hd800 lacked bass body significantly, depending on the music style. Glad that you are liking them. Also, comfort is great! ;-)

Like you, I got (aka soldered) my filter module a few weeks after I got the HD800, so I could do a lot of "stock" listening before the filter was ready :-)

Although I keep reading new posts, I haven't been very active in the forum for almost 8 months now. I have to say that I have reached a system that really pleases me with every kind of music: Ember/Polaris + Kameleon inline filter + HD800. The combo is truly amazing, especially thanks to the in-line filter. It has left me wanting nothing else :-) Hence my lack of activity!
My father came to Stockholm one month ago to visit us and he tested my rig at home. He was astonished, when we compared listening to the same song with his cellphone + chepo in-ear buds vs my rig (of course!)
Anyway, I hope you guys are enjoying as much your systems as I am enjoying mine. Enjoy the summer!
