It really does come down to the fit in the end. The sound can be manipulated with the barrels but if you can't get a good seal, they'll never give a consistent result. Such a pain.
I think I hit jackpot with the Spinfits. It would have to be them because they're so expensive!!! I can use red or yellow, but I think the yellow is better for me with a shallow insertion. The reds have to go too deep and I don't like that.
When they're in, the bass is thunderous. Never heard anything like it down there on an iem. I guess what's happening with your ears is that the yellow ones are folding slightly, so you get a small leak.
It's hard to know whether you have a really good seal but the bass really bangs in once you get it. I'm getting near enough vmoda m100 levels of thunder with mine. Quite amazing really. I reckon Bob must be a secret basshead if he reckons the red is neutral!!
........ or maybe he's blown a gasket with all the recent problems he's been having?
Because getting the tips on is so fiddly with the size of the barrels, I haven't played around with the others yet. There are just too many and with no descriptions of what each of them do, I feel that we're just shooting into the dark, so I can't really be bothered. I'm getting quite lazy in my old age!!!

Yes, the seal is critical. More so than with other IEMs I find. Normally find that I know from feel when I have achieved a good seal but have discovered that can be deceptive with the Master.
I think the Spiral Dot are the best tips for me. Although they feel slightly loose when worn I find the M give me a good seal and bass is plentiful. Large is less reliable.
One of the things I like about the Spiral Dots is that they are really pliable so are very easy to fit and remove from the filters but don't slip off accidentally. JVC also do them in intermediate sizes so finding a good match should be easier e.g. S, SM, M, ML, L. Think I'll order some ML as the ones I got were only S,M,L.
Comparing the Spiral Dot to the Spinfit has been trickier than expected as I have found that the seal with the M Spinfit is not always consistent. They never feel lacking but sometimes they get closer to the Spiral Dot in terms of bass quantity than others. With a good seal I would say there isn't much between them but perhaps the Spiral Dot has slightly more powerful bass and a touch smoother highs. Both sound good though.
If you want any more Spinfit or to try some Spiral Dots send me a PM as I plan on ordering a supply from Amazon Japan as they are the cheapest option, especially if buying multiples. You are welcome to piggyback on that if you like as I'll be paying flat rate postage anyway so all you'd need to cover would be the cost of any tips you wanted and your share of any customs fees (Amazon collect up front which removes the guesswork). Probably works out around £8.50-£9 for a pack of 2 pairs of Spinfits and the same for a pack of 3 pairs of Spiral Dot but can confirm once exact order size is known.
btw I think that the standard colours for Spinfit are either red or white irrespective of size. Think the variety of colours used in the starter packs is simply to help make it easier to match the pairs (edit: appears that Japanese Spinfits come in either red or white for all sizes but the Taiwanese made CP100 equivalents are colour code e.g. red = medium, yellow = large). My reading thus far suggests that CP100 is used everywhere outwith Japan but in Japan the this is substituted for either RD-01 or WD-01 (R=red, W = white). Seen mixed reports that the Japanese ones are softer / better quality but others say they are exactly the same. Confusing stuff!
Not exactly cheap these tips, but I suppose when you compare to Comply disposable tips the cost is easier to justify!
In other news I put the M Spinfit onto the FX850. If you thought the Master had oodles of bass for an IEM then you'd enjoy these. It's like a Fostex wooden headphone condensed into an IEM. Very entertaining listen!!

Thanks Mark. I could do with more large Spinfits for the Vyrus and maybe the Hyperion as well.
In the meantime, I made some candy produced for anyone who doesn't know what we're going on about .......

Trouble is that it's such a slow process to remove the tips and barrels and then get the new ones on followed by the tips again!! By the time you get it changed, you've forgotten what the one before did!!!
If we had descriptions, we could decide if there was anything about the sound that we didn't like and then choose a 'remedy'. Very silly that Bob left it off!! It's not even on the site yet. They just need to get their act together.
Also, it would be very easy to try to compensate for a poor seal so I'm making sure I get one before I fiddle around with barrels!
Some people on HF said that they got Spinfits with their Vyrus 2. I didn't and I'm a bit miffed about that tbh. They're the only tips that work well for me with Trinity iem's.

Yes, it's a slow and laborious process!! I also think that these ones feel a bit trickier to screw in than previous filters and these new holders only slow things further. Which makes it all the harder to compare as audible memory fades very rapidly. I should be even more miffed. I didn't get a case or Spinfits Although interestingly most descriptions now make no mention of them being included and the Master doesn't even mention a case. I got a bag of the Kombis with the Master, as I did with all 3 pairs of Hyperions I ordered and the Vyrus, so now have about a gazillion. None of which I use as I think they're terrible. Perhaps Bob is trying to tell me to sling my hook and I'm slow on the uptake??? The absence of a filter guide is baffling. I'd have thought that would be something that would naturally come together quite early on whilst the IEMs were designed / tested? Can't imagine they just punched some random holes in the filters and hoped for the best. Certainly the inclusion of two of some colours and one of others would indicate that some thought had gone into which to include. Perhaps it's just a time thing and with a small team something had to give.

He doesn't seem quite on the ball. I bet the descriptions are done and he just hasn't put them up and has overlooked the booklet.
I'm loving the sound with the red filter and Spinfits though. A massive sound that still has a sense of space. Very good indeed. The speed of the bass attack is terrific and I think because it 'clears' away so quickly, it lets the rest through re easily.
So you can have oodles of bass without it pushing everything else aside. The vmoda m100 has a problem with this sometimes but not the Master.

Absolutely. The bass is very well done and despite being pretty huge at times it never overpowers. And quick as you say with plenty of punch. (IEM) Bass done right imho.

Feel I'm just going through the motions with these filters so I leave no stone unturned. But I am 99.99% certain red is the new gold. Bob picked a good 'un to showcase this IEM Right now I think for build and sound quality this IEM is easily worth the list price. At the price you got it for it's bordering on daylight robbery!!

That's what I think. The others are possibly for those that moan about some kind of minutia in the bass or treble so he's covered his arass!!
Done a great job.

Just noticed your video overview Ian. Very professionally done, nicely paced and quite comprehensive really. Where you in the garden earlier? The new case looks nicer than I thought. Wishing I'd got one now!! I also find it a struggle to squeeze the Master into the case if left fully connected. I arranged mine quite neatly earlier on but when I took it out of the case this evening it was in a right old mess. Really quite tangled. May have a look for something a bit more suitable.

I know!!! I was actually pulling a load of weeds out from the lawn just before I filmed it. No pride at all eh? At the moment, I have to do it every day because the lawn is just full of dandelions and I end up with farmers fingers which comes out extraordinarily well in hd!! The case is exactly the same as the Vyrus one but in orangey red. It's a bit of a struggle to get the iem in with the joining barrel and I think I'd have preferred a bigger one. The wire gets bunched and the capsules get pushed down, so I might look for something else. The video was taken in the kitchen with Helena going on about something or other at the sink. When she realised I was filming, she panicked and thought Id recorded everything she'd been saying. I had been, so we listened to the live soundtrack first, before I put the film together and took the live stuff off!!! Otherwise, she might be in court.

Nice video Ian. The way you said aluminum I am beginning to think you might be British! Wish I could use IEM's. I have tried a few pairs over the years, but they all irritate my ear canals fairly quickly. Bonus question? What is the molar mass of aluminum?

I knew that you guys pronounce alumin ium wrong but hadn't realised you get the spelling muddled too!! It's strange that despite sharing a common tongue our respective versions each have their own little peculiarities. Makes you wonder about how the origins of some of them e.g. misspelling, Chinese whispers, regional drawl, an argument between scientists on either side of the pond regarding what to call something etc. I'm going to have a wild guess and say the molar mass is 26.9815?

You are correct. 26.9815! Grams of course. You did better than my students did Friday. Yeah, strange how English became American over here. And the spellings too. Like color.
