Photobucket is a Denver, CO based company and is owned by our good friends at News Corp. They got a new CEO. Here's an article in the Denver Post. link

I have said for some time that P'bucket was now unusable because of the high number of intrusive adds as well as the general slowness of the site. Downloaded my photographs and closed my account. End of.
Still with Flickr... I'll see how it goes.

I went on last night to delete the 96 pics I'd had on Photobucket for years and discovered you can't delete pics, so I happily deleted the whole thing.
Strange rule, just surprised they allow us to leave!

Hi Syd, I reckon you should only delete your pics when you have made arrangements to replace each one you wish to keep, say on this forum or RG. So first find a new host who will allow you to link into your own pics on the host site, place copies there, delete the P/B link and then link to the new host. You can delete any pics on P/B by hovering the cursor over the top left corner click on the three white horizontal bars and delete in the drop-down menu. As Ian has pointed out you can download your entire album/s from the menu bar on the right side of any open library window, look for the Actions Menu and download. Download wont clear your picks off the P/B site, rather than just closing your account, make a point of deleting each one then close the account.
I only use P/B as a repository to link to, all my pics are stored on my PC/on numerous hard drives. My copies on P/B are mostly low quality Jpegs only suitable for the web, you wouldn't wish to print from them. Unfortunately for many forums and blogs P/B's actions have made a mess of those which rely on photos. At the moment P/B is still linking my pics to this forum and RG how long that will last we will have to see. I might replace any pics they block by loading them on my family history website using that as the host for any pic links I wish to keep.
The morality of offering hosting as a free service until you have pulled in sufficient "marks" before setting the sucker punch certainly stinks. But as in many transactions "caveat emptor" definitely rules. Free rides are seldom actually free. Alan

Hi Alan Like yourself, I only used PB for pics for here and previously RG. Most of them are from old posts, any that are required on my posts can be replaced. I keep numerous backups of my originals. I read the FAQs on PB and it said they can't be deleted. No doubt some obscure out of date piece of info I stumbled on.
Too late now anyway <G>

I just had a quick look what it would cost to 'update' the account so pictures will show again. $399.99 / Year. !!! Yes ... from hosting pictures for free to $399.99 each year ! Talk about ransomware... Pay us $399.99 a Year or you have to redo about 1000 links on your website. Eat that suckers... Lets ponder about this: Photobucket is the global destination for linking and 3rd party hosting. In Photobucket’s 14-year history, the Company amassed over 100 million registered users, over 15 billion images stored, 2 million daily uploads and 10 billion photos accessed monthly. Lets just assume that just 1% is using it as 3rd party hosting the rest to store their family pics. That's 1million potential paying custormers. Let's assume that 1% of those people take the bate and 99% searches for another host. That's 10.000 people forking out $ 400.- each year. That's $ 4 million revenue where this would be far less in case some people used paid accounts anyway. Yep... ransomware ... legally done. I have been on holiday Frans and have been catching up on the posts. Ransomware legally done is the polite way of saying things I would say more like Robbing B******S who have totally ruined quite a lot of the threads on this site, making it almost impossible to go through every post and replace the pictures. I have now been on Photobuckets site and closed down my account and like Ian I let them know exactly how I felt about their activities, not that it will make any difference but at least I felt good telling them.

Trouble is that they want shot of the free people in any case. It would have been a nice gesture though, if they had left what was posted there up until now as it is and then make changes for future pictures,
Cutting it all off like that shows just how little they care and who knows, they could do it all again in the future if they decide to put the fees up even more and have customers trapped into their paying system. Sod that for a lark!!

I still need to register at Imgur and load my bucket comtent up there.
Thought about removing all my pictures at PhotoLockit but here is the thing.
They WANT to get rid of all of those people that take up space on their servers which generates no income. This way they cleared a lot of space on their servers and don't have to buy more storage and get extra money by extorsion and aggressive advertising on their website. So I decided to upload my bucket a few times so I take up even more space on their servers (granted its just a few Meg.) and not link the crap at all so it will just sit there, take up space and generate no income.
I use one of those addblockers anyway but noticed many websites now (temporarily) block access and ask you to disable the add blocker. Would not be surprised if after some time that block time will increase or access will be denied completely unless you pay or allow adds.

Sod that for a lark!! Yeh Ian, it would have been more accepetable if they had given you a months notice to try and replace some of the more important photos. I took printscreen shots of all my photos - see below: They are roughly in the order that I uploaded them and I am going to try and replace the important pics for example the portable Kameleon, which I am sure will help others who are wanting to build one. Don't know how long it will take me but If I replace 2 photos every time I log on then it will soon be done? I am just hoping Flickr do not do the same dirty trick in the future

Spent the day re-linking photos that got messed up with Photo*ucket. Bit by bit, I think I'll get most of my photos fixed. What a pain in the rear!

Great minds think alike Joe, I also spent quite a bit of time yesterday re-linking my photos on the kameleon thread, just a few more to go May have to think about some of the other threads? it's a lot of hard work figuring out what photo fits where

I'm just letting it lie and not bothering to re-link to any images. I think, in this forum, I've added most (if not all) images as attachments, so no problem there. In RG, many of my old posts will have blanks.

Well RG seems like a ghost ship now anyway, so I don't think I'd go through that lot Derek!!
I've not posted anything much as far as pictures go, so I'm just going to leave it. The *uckett replacement might end up doing exactly the same thing so I won't bother.

Thanks Derek, I tried the attachment route when 'uckett first buggered up mine and it didn't work, probably not doing it right as Proboards was not allowing me to attach. Seeing your post I went back to attachments and had another go...............bingo! perfect method...........who needs a hosting site. So here's to you Derek.....................
