Try turning 'Prefetch' off just for the week. Stops Windows trying to catalogue everything!!
That's surprising on a new install. It'll be interesting to find out what is stopping it.
Now mine's all freshened up, everything runs really well. No more crashes and things pop up quite quickly considering just how 'bog standard' it actually is.
I leave it rendering movie footage all night. It takes a ridiculously long time to sort out HD video. Still, I'm amazed that it runs the software.

Thanks Ian, that seems to be helping a bit. Hadn't seen that suggested in my searches.
Just one 'working on it' instance today.

The 'Prefetch' is supposed to speed things up in the future by getting all the searches done and cataloguing them. Unfortunately, it seems to get in the way after a while.
I hope you manage to get a fresh install. It does make a big difference and is something Ill be doing either 6 monthly or yearly, I think.

Did you get it sorted Syd? Hopefully all is OK now Ian. Just spending my time finding licence numbers for a few programs that I don't use a lot and getting annoyed every time I go to do something and discovering it needs reinstalled! It's been working well since Friday as far as speed and explorer goes. Thanks for the offer Javier, I know you would help willingly as you have before, it's very brave of you<G> My son sorted it, it's just getting some of his time when he's visiting, but it worked out well.

Great. That’s good to hear. Do you know what the installation problem was with Windows? I was quite curious about that.

Great. That’s good to hear. Do you know what the installation problem was with Windows? I was quite curious about that. The main problem was me<G>. I'm joking a bit but I do tend to spend a lot of time on the PC and I'm forever trying different 'apps' for whatever I'm into at the time. I'm not very disciplined at taking the rejected ones off and so that will have been a big part of it. Your suggestion helped a lot and kept things going until it could be dealt with. As I said before though there are a lot of people experiencing the same or similar problems when you query online and even with my bad habits I've never had it happen before. I had tried twice to do the safe install which failed each time at 91% then my son brought another known reliable version and it quit in exactly the same way. At that point we decided no point in messing around and I bought a nice new SSD, I have had a Sandisk in as C drive for a few years and I'm sure it's not the problem but I have mostly Samsung elsewhere so got the Pro version and put the new install on that. David is certain it wasn't the problem but I thought it best just to start really fresh, the Sandisk can go in a caddy, Ive just to read up on how to 'wipe' it properly. I've got some software from Sandisk and I'll use that.

Very strange. I was wondering what was causing the hang up on the install. A bit worrying if you’ve chosen to start again and the Operating System refuses to load!,

The hangup each time left the current version functioning exactly as before, so it was no problem.
When we decided to do a fresh install I had the original C drive intact to go back to.
Had a great experience with Tag&rename, a pay for app that I've had for years, at least 10. Each time that a new version was downloaded it picked up the registration and somewhere along the way I lost the registration code. As a long shot I contacted them and gave them my email address and almost by return they resent my details, I certainly appreciated that.

That’s good. Sometimes, these companies don’t store anything and leave it up to you.
With my laptop, I only have film and sound software installed that is used regularly, so a reinstall is pretty easy thank goodness.
I found the speedup following my recent reinstallation massive. It’s booted up and ready to go in less than a minute whereas before, I had to walk off and leave it. It also loads a programme while still chirruping away on the bootup. Before, everything just froze for a while.
I have no idea what caused it all, but the inability to recognise my external drives forced me into yet another version of Windows.
That laptop is bog standard though so I don’t expect too much. It’s just left rendering films most of the time.
