50 Years now since 5e first performance of Hair in the USA. I did a tour of it in the 70s and even then, it was considered a very risqué type of show. Had some very funny incidents in the auditorium in some theatres; the funniest in Wales where one night, the audience believed the spoof entrance of the police at the end of Act 1 was real. Some got up and started to do a runner!! That was in Cardiff. Fresh out of college and playing for a ‘dirty’ show......... A street ‘rehearsal’ in the 70s as a publicity stunt ....

I remember when it opened in San Francisco. Quite the culture shock. Lots of tut tuts from the older generation. Of course we loved it. When Aquarius chartered, some predicted the end of civilization. Seems my whole life civilization has always been on the brink of extinction.

In the UK, it was very much seen as American but the nude scene at the end of Act 1 was always the bit where audiences almost sqirmed.
Another show followed later in London called ‘Oh Calcutta’, although I think it might have premiered in the USA. It was written by a Brit. Kind of freaky and strange and featured a nude ballet amongst loads of other things. I think that started up in the early 70’s and the Police were on the verge of prosecution under the ‘obscenity’ act in London.
I blame Strauss. He made Salome get her kit off in his opera.

Pretty sure Old Calcutta was ours too. Debuted Off-Broadway in 1969. Different times. Better?? Depends on what you were doing and where.
