I recently got a CAyin N3. It works great as as DAP, but has some issues working as a DAC.
After a minute or so of playing I start getting some clicks that makes it sound like a "vinyl clickitizer" VST plug-in has kicked in. The clicks are pretty much random, both channels. This problem happens on both my Windows 10 laptop and my DAPhile (Linux) server so that should eliminate software as the problem. All formats/codecs are affected, but it seems like 48Khz multiples aren't as bad - could just be a coincidence, haven't thoroughly tested that theory.
What do you guys think? Is it something as simple as a cable problem - apparently Cayin has had some issues with cables. This is my first device with a type c connector so I don't have any other cables to try and would like to see what the chances are before I buy a new one.
I'm waiting to hear back from Cayin about this - others have problems in DAC mode too - to see if it could be a hardware or firmware problem. I just hope its something that can be fixed (ie not a design flaw) since DAC capability is a big selling point for me - I honestly was torn between getting the N3 or just buying a desktop DAC since that's where I do half my listening.
On that front, what are your opinions on desktop DACs? Many players have that capability nowadays, so I wonder if it's really worth getting a dedicated device anymore
