I’d like to replace my cable for the MDR1a because the supplied cable isn’t that great but it has a weird fitting into the cup.
It’s a 3.5mm but has a plastic shoulder similar to those plugs that have a screw thread for a larger plug, but it has no thread and is just a straight plastic shoulder.
Does this kind of plug have a name so I can search for one or is it a Sony thing? It’s a real pain tbh.

I think it's just a Sony thing Ian. Probably so you have to pay their OTT spare prices if you need a replacement or better still buy their 'upgrade' cable...which iirc costs not much less than the headphones themselves!!
There are some 3rd party cables on ebay etc. but the choice is limited and whether they'd be an improvement is anyone's guess.

That’s exactly what I found Mark. The Sony one if a daft price and most EBay ones are again, a stupid price or microphonic.
Those plugs with the shoulder are a pain. I was wondering whether they had some kind of official name, so I could do a better search.
Just been trying a Kameleon filter with them and they are massively improved. Smoother top end, Bass hump is decreased and they are way more clear sounding. I compared to the MSR7 and with a Kameleon, I actually prefer the Sony. Hits deeper and way better top end.
So the portable Kameleon that I was going to give away is staying here for the Sony I think.
Ideally, I’d love a fixed Kameleon that was really small for it to make it properly portable. A Kameleon egg. These portable units are fantastic but too big for pockets. I’m glad that I hung on to the Sony now!!

I did and have tried them before on other headphones. They’re nicely made but so microphonic its unbelieveable!! I wouldn’t buy an expensive cable but I’m after something a bit more rubbery, but thanks for the suggestion.

I guess since the 400i uses a Y-cable the microphonics aren't an issue Well, as best as I can tell, that plug is just one of those "smartphone case compatible" types - really can't say 100% without seeing it though. Is it correct for me to assume the Sony has a collar that covers the silver section of the plug? The HP150 uses a locking collar that makes it a total bugger trying to find a cable that fits, so I feel your pain. The source end of my X2 cable looks similar - maybe they could work, but that cable is a tad noisy when it rubs my shirt collar (possibly a common problem with all cloth jacketed cables?) Maybe if you have a pair of calipers, you could measure the size and check around (The only cable I've heard about with a small enough diameter to fit in the HP150 collar came from Luna Shops - here's a Sony cable they have: www.lunashops.com/goods.php?id=5682)

That one looks OK, Mr Trev sir!! Thank you.
I wonder if I can find a UK supplier? Sensible price as well. I’ll have a look ...

Folks have said good stuff about what LunaShops sells. The only problem is the slow boat from China shipping

Hi Syd. Thanks for the link.
I have seen some of these already and I’m just not sure whether they would fit because of that shoulder that Sony have on their plugs. It may well be just a Sony thing. Makes you have to buy their cables or the only other choice is to buy an equivalent from eBay when you’re not really given much chance to assess the quality before buying.
The Chinese ones are microphonic although they are tough as hell. There are also some very expensive options. I think it’s just a case of Sony cornering their own little market.

I thought the slim size of this would let it attach to the Sony, I thought thickness of standard 3.5mm plugs was the issue.
They're all getting worse at blocking anyone else's products.

I think they are Syd. The Sony is odd with that shoulder.
I guess Sennheiser are the same with their connectors. It’s a pity that there isn’t just one standard like a 3.5 mm mono or stereo plug if it’s a one side cable.

I had a similar issue with my Beyerdynamics Custom ONE Pro (cable with plug being thick due to its locking mechanism), had to get something like this as a replacement cable (plug so thin that it can be used easily): www2.elecom.co.jp/products/DH-MMCN20.html
