Well maybe it is... to some... one of the better ones < 1500.- but there sure will be 'better' ones in that price range

Just received an email from Massdrop that my HD58X are on the way (with a DHL link that can't find the details, ho-hum). I expect the next thing I will get is an invoice from DHL for UK import duty and VAT. :-)

Yep that will most likely add about GBP 35.- ? (VAT + costs)
Still, quite worth it IMO. With a small modification it sounds really great. By the 25th I can (most likely) publish my findings/mods. Jude must publish first.. that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Any insider info about when/if the next drop will happen? (Hopefully before the Great Tariff Wars turn our planet into a smoking cinder ) I'm seriously thinking about grabbing a pair. From the limited impressions so far seems like something not to pass up

You can turn it into a cheap HD660 which makes it very interesting at this price. Massdrop ordered more than they needed so when the next drop opens (have no idea when) you could snag one and maybe they ship it really quick.
After that I reckon more drops will be there. IMO I would rather buy a HD58X than HD6XX so reckon they will be around for a while.
HD650 build quality in all black (very very dark grey grilles).

I have been passively looking for a deal on an used pair of HD6xx, but your comments about the extended bass of the 58x definitely has me more intrigued - the reduced bass has always been the one sticking point of the other Senn models. I'm not a bass monger by any means, but a lot of my music does have some really low bass content (Pacific Codex by Bass Communion for example) so having a pair of phones that couldn't do a respectable job of reproducing it would be a let down (my 400i with a low pass boost does so nicely). Maybe if Massdrop does have an oversupply, they'll offer them for direct sale - I believe they've done this before. I imagine they'll go quick if they do
On a slight off topic diversion, have you given any older Senn models a listen? The HD540 get a lot of love over on Head-fi. I used to have a pair back in the day - albeit the mk II variant (my first "proper" piece of hifi gear), and I keep wondering if I should try and find another pair

Back in the days those may well have been nice. I don't think they won't compare favourably with newer models. Remembering that the older Sennheiser models had less bass than newer models.

With the HD660 and HD58x available, is the HD650 still a valid option or better left aside if a deal presents itself? It's harder to find these days, most stores already no longer carry it.

Some people still feel the HD650 is the better headphone out there. The HD660S and HD58X sound a little bit 'fresher' to me where the HD650 is a bit 'softer' as in 'more relaxed' and a bit more 'romantic'. The differences are not big.
It is a personal thing not a matter of absolute truth.
Myself I am perfectly happy with the modified HD58X and rarely use my HD650.
HD800, HD58X and HD688 (modified proto) get most ear time.

Yep that will most likely add about GBP 40.- ? (VAT + costs) Just received an email from Customs Clearance Ltd. (acting on behalf of DHL - as jello noted earlier in the thread) with a request to pay £31.33 to clear the goods (£8.50 'Customs Entry' charge and £22.83 VAT, which is 20% of $150), so not too bad - it make the total cost to be £145. HD660S retail at £430. Looking forward to receiving (and modding) the 58X soon.

New HD58X page is online. In it there are links to the pdf which contains the modding guide. It is not described on the webpage itself.
Quite worth £145 IMO
