I was just ‘found’ by this guy who claimed to know me on Facebook, in the 70s.
Now, most here won’t know this but I did have a serious accident on a motorbike, losing a finger and the loss of the use of my legs for 4 years and added on top, serious memory loss from childhood to the accident. I still have no memories but everything since is fine. It’s kind of blotted out.
So whenever someone gets back to me, I’m always aware that I am at a total loss as to who they are and they often get offended so I have to tell them. (To me, it’s a major embarrassment not knowing my own childhood or loads after. I only remember tiny snippets of things)
So I explained this to the guy and asked him not to be offended that I didn’t actually know him. I often get this from childhood friends who I haven’t a clue about.
He came back with a link which contains recordings of me in the early and mid 70s playing for an amateur operatic group that I used to go on tour to Devon with, in order to do a Summer Gilbert and Sullivan show down there every year for the locals and holiday people.
Here’s the really weird bit. I recognise my playing and every note that I played on the oboe, but only remember two people in the cast. This guy was singing with a load of them yesterday, so they all posed for me and he sent the picture. I only recognised one of them. It is REALLY annoying not to be able to remember anything much but made even worse when people who obviously know you invite you out for a drink and to you, they are COMPLETE strangers. I find it very uncomfortable because they talk about me and things that I did, but I am unaware of them so it’s like hearing about someone else to me. I normally just laugh and pretend I remember but some is a bit scary.
One bloke told me that I had too much to drink after a show in London and I tightrope walked along the handrail of Chelsea Bridge. The Thames a long way down on my right. I actually went there to have a look and really, I must have been mental.
Maybe that’s why I’m a bit of a nutcase? I really know nothing much about being a kid or up until I was around 28 years old. What puzzles me though is how I remember the playing in the recordings. Strange.......
On another note, we had a memory foam topper delivered yesterday for the bed. I’ve used one on my side for a while but we got a King sized one because Helena sometimes wakes up with a hip ache. I woke up this morning in exactly the same position I was in last night. I don’t think I moved once. Dead to the world.
We have one of those Tempur mattresses so it’s very good, but this topper really tops it it off!! They are damned expensive but my goodness, I’ve been feeling wide awake all this morning and not my usual lethargic, tired self.
I can’t believe that I didn’t move and didn’t have an aching back this morning when I got up. I’m actually looking forward to going back tonight!!!
