I had a small shift around a couple of weeks ago and decided to move the sub for the TV.
Initially, it was right beside the TV firing at me with the stereo front speakers directly beside it to the right. I decided to get it out of the way since it’s connected wirelessly so I stuffed it between two chairs.
Listening made the front speakers seem more defined but there was an underlying rumble that I didn’t like. I think the sub was too close to me, so I moved it to a completely hidden place ...... behind a sofa, firing sideways!
Result ..... less underlying rumble on everything until something kicks off. Then it seems to go with avengeance!
There is no sense whatsoever of sound coming from behind the sofa but the front speakers are now way more detailed sounding, I think because they have been massively separated from the sub.
So although sub placement doesn’t directly affect imaging whatsoever and you can’t determine where the bass is coming from, it results in a cleaner front with the same lower bass clout when it’s there.
Obviously something to do with in room reflections but it really does pay to play around with the sub positioning in spite of ‘instructions’ telling you to place it anywhere. It doesn’t so much affect the bass but how you hear the other speakers.
Initially, I noticed an underlying rumble from the speaker during most stuff unless I turned the sub down, but now I’m not aware of it until it kicks off with the setting back to ‘normal’.
