I am getting a 2nd hand pair of these, mainly as I am interested in modding them to take a pair of the wood earcups that have been the subject of a looooooong thread on HeadFi. Has anyone here modded a pair?

I owned an SR60 for a while (seeing how headroom liked it) Was a second hand one.
Liked it very much, initially, very forward and 'open' sounding with seemingly LOTS of details.
After some time the lack of bass-extension and the peak (fake details) in the highs as well as comfort issues bugged me. Tried different pads which changed some of the sonic character.
The U shaped ones sound best but have 'fake' detail (peaked highs) and 'fake' bass (no extension just a peak around 100Hz. Sold them again after a while.

The woodies were the same. I had them on loan.

I have a pair I built from SR80s with black cherry cups. They are keepers, I will probably not part with them.
I have a pair of RS2i to compare. With the SR80 drivers they are a bit more lively sounding.

I found the SR80 slightly more relaxed than the SR60 Thunderhead. I also wonder what effect different woods could have on the sound.
I now have the sr125i. Really weird in that the original that I had (The sr125) was very shrill for me but this version with the flat pads is actually pretty mellow by Grado standards.
Ideally for me, I'd like a really short lead so I could use them portable rather than the Igrado which I don't like very much if I'm honest.

I have a very old pair of SR60's and a less older pair of SR325's. Both were my main headphones for a long time, but I was using them with the headphone jack on my receiver's. When I finally got the stock MF X-CAN V2, I found them too have too much treble (ringing?) and too little bass. Thus began my quest for a better headphone. Unlike in Lord of the Rings, my quest is still continuing. I have tried a different pad on the 325's which helped with the treble but made what bass was there sound smeared.

I had the SR325i for a while as well Ron but couldn't get on with its sound at all. I also didn't like the bowls and wsn't keen on it with flat pads.
The bass is weird because you do get bass, but nothing really deep in comparison to other headphones. I've had the sr60, 80,125,225 and 325 all at some time. Could never get on with any of them really.
I even had the first bsr325i in the UK. I ordered a 325 and instead of a gold one, a silver one turned up. It turns out that I had the first one here because I complained, thinking I'd been diddled.
I then even wrote to John Grado (who replied!!) The 325i was slightly better in the bass and perhaps not as searing as the original, but none of them suited me.

Well, all the above posts have come in since OI first posted. I have now got the SR60's and am delighted with them. Now I don't know if there are production anomalies with these things, but I tried a pair of my mates many years ago and thought they were rubbish. From then on I discounted Grados as a headphone for me. However a couple of years ago I bought a pair of iGrados which are said to have the same drivers as the SR60. I liked their sound, but hated the headband arrangement. I modded them by attaching a proper headband from an old pair of Sony's and have used them a lot since. They do bass very well and I don't find them fatiguing, but not the most open sounding.
When I first tried the SR60's I had a "deja vu" moment and was transported back to the time I tried my mates pair. The fit was really sloppy and I felt that this might account for what I was hearing. Vague, quite bright and not a lot of bass. By chance I had seen a pair on sale on ebay where all that was left of the headband was the metal inner band. I was not aware of the headband construction until I saw that. So, I bent the headband and tried them again. After a little more judicious bending I got a nice comfortable fit and the sound....well it was transformed. Bass is nice and deep and tight and they are so airy and detailed. I didn't get around to messing with them until 10pm on Friday, next time I looked at the clock it was after midnight. So for £40 I am v.happy. Will I rip them apart to add some "woodies"....mmmm probably not.

£40 was a good buy Rob. I don't think there's a massive advantage to 'woodying' them myself. The wood cups are vented anyway.
Mike's woodied SR60 looks great but it still has an open grid on the back which is set further back because of the cups so in effect, there may be a slight 'loading' on the driver having a slightly longer cup behind it, but we're only talking small measurements really.
They look great though. He's also rewired them.

The one thing I need to do is re-wire the iGrado's. The stock cable is like dental floss!

I agree. A small pull on the cord and it'll probably disconnect itself!! You don't want anything too thick though.
