Mmm Music. This is the thing that is sooo personal and subjective and can generate quite heated debate....like "god, you really can't like that rubbush - can you?" Some may take an instant dislike to you simply because of your musical bent.
Anyway, I have been a lifelong listener of anything funky. In the 70's it was Jazz-Funk, Blackbyrds, Herbie Hancock, Parliament, Funkadelic etc, but also funky soul, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang (before they sold out to the club circuit - Ladies Night etc urrggh - puke) and many other unknown (to the masses) US based outfits, the vinyl sourced through various outlets the main one being Contempo Soul Source in Hanway St (just off Oxfors St, London) Contempo also produced the Blues and Soul mag. Other outlets were One Stop records in South Molton St (recently found out that Danny Baker used to work there in the 70s)
Coming more up to date I listen to anything that has a "Jazzy" content, Acid Jazz, Smooth Jazz (a sadly derogatory term in my view), Ambient Jazz, and other styles to encompass Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Walter Becker (his solo stuff in excellent) check out his Circus Money from 2008 you will see where The Dan get their Reggae influence from. I aslo listen to a lot of Dub style stuff. There is a great album around call The Police in Dub - if you like The Police you should like this. I alos like stuff like Lene Marlin, Mary Black, Jennifer Warnes, Joe Sample, Larry carlton, Lee Ritenour.
For something completely different I just love the film soundtrack that Vangelis scored for the 1882 soundtrack. There is some real spine tingling stuff on there. Right - that's enough for now.

Jazz is a funny one for me. I like it when it's 'wallpaper' if I'm in a bar or club - but I just can't sit and listen to it. Acid Jazz is a different matter though - although I only have a couple of compilation discs. I'd be grateful for any Acid Jazz recommendations.

If you have a Spotify account this is great to try loads of stuff. This may be a bit off the wall for you, but Alien Chatter - Music For Aliens has (IMO) some great stuff on it (not neccessarily every track though), say from track 5 onwards. or you could try Tokyo Tower or Alien Cafe - Metropol or Lemongrass - Sirius. For some pleasant smooth jazz style stuff try Curtis MacDonald - Gold Coast.

I have mentioned that service elsewhere to get the almost equivalent of a 'snotty' look in words. I think it's a great resource and I don't care about the quality of the stuff when I'm using it as a sampler. Sometimes, I listen to a podcast about music and any stuff that I hear, I look it up on Spotify and it's instantly on my Ipod toi hear fully at a later date in 320KBs. If I really like it, then go for a CD!! Makes sense to me, but some hi fi types tend to turn their noses up at it. I hate that kind of snobbery. Also the kind of person who couldn't possible listen to a Portapro because there's not enough resolution. What a load of nonsense that is!!! Hi fi is there to play what you throw at it imo. Good, bad and ugly. It should make the best of what you give it. I have no time for these people who will only cope with a hi res version. Total rubbish. My tastes are pretty wide so hopefully, there won't be any offence caused. Of course if you have some stuff you want to write about - please do!! I use your recommendations too you know.

I use iTunes to audition stuff and then buy the CD - but I'll sign up to Spotify now as iTunes can be limited. I know what you mean about resolution - if my toes are tapping I often don't even think about the 'quality'.

I have a free Spotify account and have great fun sampling anything from 10s to a min of something that takes my fancy. As far as hi-res formats are concerned, I think my ears are shot through too many years of high level listening, so lo-res is the one for me ;D

I pay so I don't get the adverts and it's higher resolution. Plus the fact I can download stuff to my Ipods and phone. I think it's terrific. A great way to discover new music. I wish this was around in the 70's - I could have made money...... (or not)
