I'm posting this since I want to try to have a forum where people contribute in a positive way without the negative vibes that can happen on some sites. If a discussion gets out of hand, can I please ask one of you to STOP. If it doesn't stop, the posts will disappear with no explanation given. On a more positive note, what do you want to talk about? This place needs to be a fun place to visit with loads of info at our fingertips as well, from DIYAH courtesy of Solderdude. This forum is aiming at being slightly different in that it places the info in one place, so is easily accessed at any time without a long winded search through a massive forum. So much gets repeated on forums in many scattered places, so we thought we could leave the info in one place and the discussion stuff in another. A combo of tech stuff and social chat too. No place for know-alls. Most important, have fun!! ;D

Can I suggest (sorry Javier ) that some thought is given to a basic thread about file based audio. I know most on here will be familiar with this aspect, to a greater or lesser extent but I believe this will increase in popularity in coming years. One of the aims of this forum, I assume, is to attract new members and I believe more and more non-forum people will take an interest in the subject - this could be a way in for them. I suggest that we keep it very basic, at the sort of level that might interest total 'know nowts' like me, at least at the start, and perhaps make it a 'sticky'? Suggested bullet points might be: What you can and cannot do legally as far as ripping music is concerned, How to rip for best results, programs to use and their various settings, what the settings mean, etc. etc., pros and cons of each pogrom, How and where to store the files to maximise safety (from loss) and reliability of playback, Which programs to use for playback and the pros and cons of each. Can I also suggest old 'staples' like Wanted and For Sale and perhaps a wide open 'Can you help' thread where literally any request for any sort of help might be posted. Also a Tips and Tricks thread where more experienced or adventurous members can post about anything useful or interesting they've discovered that might not be widely known. Give me a few days and I might come up with another list . Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave. Funnily enough, Javier and I were discussing this and my instant thoughts were back to basics of Ipods/mp3 as well. Trouble is some of the digital gear (like the DAC I reviewed) is quite expensive and not everyone wants to invest that type of money in it. We have been looking for possibilities in digital files and you've given us some ideas there!! Personally, I'd like to try and get some fresh names in too. People that we haven't seen around on forums. I think some people get a bit frightened to post since perhaps we all come across as a bit 'nerdy' and 'clicky'? Not sure. We do tend to get fixed in our ideas of what people want to read about and we assume it's always the best gear, when in fact, it's more often about gear that can be afforded; not necessarily the best.

I would like to see a "Naked Olympics" but that is maybe a bit to much to ask for in an audioforum...

I could always record a hi definition audio commentary on one for you Claus.

Can we have a few examples of possible entries for the Naked Olympics thread please? Where is Miguel when you need him? Dave.

I would like to see if anyone has used resistors to make an adaptor for a normal power amp in order to use a headphone socket. There is an article on ESP (Elliot Sound Products) I made a headphone OUT using the resistor values on ESP for an TDA 2030 chip amp. Sounds pretty good to me.
An article on this would interest me.

I did it years ago and it worked quite nicely. Solderdude would have some really good ideas on this and what would work best. I bolted my old Senn 414's to a NAD amp in the 70's. It was seriously noisy so some inline resistors were put in line via a clever little box and it was really good. The 414's were considered really good headphones in those days and I actually used them to monitor in studios!!

I am planning on writing an article on this as Mick asked a similar question. the 'basis' for this article is already on here diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/amplifiers/ (scroll down) and is from posts in a thread elsewhere. There will be some pictures in it and the text will be edited to a cohesive story. Now it is only a reply from halfway in thread. In the 'old' days all amplifiers that had a headphone out on power amps simply had a single resistor or voltage divider (2 or 3 resistors) like this in it. Output resistances of 600 Ohm weren't an exception !

It occurred to me after I had posted that you need to be careful that the intended amp is not BTL.

Indeed... it is.
You can use them but only when the return wires are separated so NOT with a 3 pole plug, only when the headphones can be driven by balanced amplifiers.

Crossfeed. Has anyone made the one on RG? Does it do it for you and if so why? I seem to remember getting a board from a group buy on RG to make a crossfeed. I can't remember A, if I made it up and then lost it, or B, just lost it ;D, but I have never used/heard it. Rob.
