I have been playing again with my SFI drivers. Had almost forgotten them with those Fostexes around. So my thoughts were ... I am going to revive them and see how well they do when filtered with a test rig vs by ear. below green trace: SFI driver mounted on DT330 baffle in a DT990 housing using DT770 pads. purple trace: same but filtered with quite a complicated filter. Below L and R driver smoothed 1/3 octave (otherwise it looks a bit too wobbly ) 30Hz to 18kHz isn't that bad for what WAS sold as a tweeter. Seeing as these drivers were sold in 32 and 120 Ohm versions with holes on both sides and also in 8 Ohm but with holes on one side only I suspect these drivers were not intended as tweeters at all but as headphone drivers. Stand alone I tried it with various pads and configurations but won't measure nor sound well at all. I have to say with the filter (3 notch sections, had to add one to the filter PCB) it sounds excellent and with a slightly raised bass and treble it sounds excellent and I would even go as far as by saying it rivals the filtered T50's ! Have been enjoying it over the last few days. Maybe some pics will be added later. Pointless to 'copy' as drivers are no longer available and not many people will have spare DT990 housings, spare DT330's to get the baffle from (can be made yourself though) and the DT770 pads as well as a filter also might not be in everyones tinkerbox.

Mine were superglued into a wooden cup which are very rounded, and they sound totally bass focussed, Frans. They have very little in the top end. I can't remember which version mine were but I think the drivers weren't the same impedance as yours. Maybe 120 ohms.

hmm one of the drivers is kind of defective sometimes. It did that a while back too on occasions.
Fortunately I bought the last 2 when they were still around so have some 'spares' left.

I repaired the driver instead of replacing it . as promised some pictures. I baptised this headphone SFI-973F as it consists of SFI drivers, DT 990 housing, DT 770 pads and DT 330 baffles and it is Filtered. below the inside of the headphone. This is how it looks assembled It needs quite a bit of filtering to get it right but those few Euro drivers sound like a > 1kEuro system and is very comfortable. Modified CHAmp (so it has sh!tloads of power but no configurable output resistance any more) + filter PCB + add-on Very pleased with it sounds really excellent. Those that may be interested in copying it can contact me.
