The WaveIO uses TI's LP5900 regulators, their max. input is 5.5V so there is a chance you could toast it if you supply 6V

This is still cheaper but not in a nice case nor a fancy display or THIS which is in a case and seems very versatile: You really want to have a look HERE though

Syd really, or are you saying that with tongue in cheek? it looks like the "audiophonics" unit i posted is just a re-badged version of the chinese offering. thing is it may not be any dearer time you add customs charges. would like to hear what Javier thinks about these units from a tech point of view?

Looks very flashy but why would you want (and pay for) an HDMI output? There are very few (can't think of any south of 10k$) DACs with that type of input.

really, or are you saying that with tongue in cheek? I was serious, I like hifi to look good and I was assuming that Frans was thinking they were worth a look, maybe I've missed a bit of irony? I think at the price the unnecessary outputs aren't a concern. Syd

I don't think it has an HDMI output at all, I think they just used the connector type as it appears to have balanced I2S on this plug as well as SPDIF acc to the specsheet: ...Sortie direct I2S / DSD sur connecteur HDMI... HDMI does not support those formats.
The irony was that the link was for the exact same device as oldson linked to but at a lower price. Unfortunately import duties would probably make it equally expensive...
I liked the looks of it too and what makes you pay extra for it is the nice display and enclosure. Wished I needed one myself but my DACs have no SPDIF inputs.
Thinking of making a DAC just so I have something to do... but not from the ground up and not with fancy displays just functionality.

At least it appears to have an SPDIF coax output transformer (some circuits are simply DC coupled) so at least it is galvanically isolated from the USB (PC/source).
If the circuit doesn't draw too much power (<200mA) it should not be that big a problem. One could always use it with a 5V power injector via USB though or disconnect the power from the USB cord and power it via the HDMI plug.
Neither seller informs us on the power(or current) drawn via USB

Neither seller informs us on the power(or current) drawn via USB that method of isolation sounds the same as my hiface unit from what i have read. my biggest issue with the hiface has been the need to keep unplugging and re-plugging it. the 5v power injector via usb, you mention, i assume this is what the aqvox usb unit does? are there cheaper alternatives?
