HD 650

Hi guys.
I have decided to take everybody's advice and finally buy myself proper mid fi headphones.
I am thinking of the HD 650.
1. The priority is music. However, I want to use them with movies and games also. Are they good for that?
2. Also, I need a 5m extension cable. Does a belkin work for that?
is HD 650 good enough for me? Considering I don't want to spend more than that on headphones, at least not for the next several years.
Is this a good choice?
Thank You so much.
Aakshey
PS: You guys were right. HD 650 is indeed a step up from my stuff when I auditioned. Not that my stuff is bad, but HD 650 was better.
PS2: I have decided to stop my hobby of buying every tube out there. The differences are small enough to not need more than like half a dozen or so tops!

I own the HD650 and would say it is a good albeit darkish headphone but excellent in retrieval of fine nuances. It doesn't have gut wrenching bass and is overly warm or 'twinkling' in the highs. Non fatiguing, well built, non microphonic cable, comfortable but with a sturdy clamping force.
The only headphones that can really beat most dynamic headphones is ortho's and they need to be the more expensive ones. Cheapest and already excellent is hifiman HE400 / HE500
HD600 is more neutral (honest), HD650 is warmer, more fun but has less distortion.
5M is NO problem, certainly not for 300 Ohm headphones.
A cheap alternative to HD600 = HD558
recommended ones (for Hi-Fi listening NOT gaming or movies)
Medium price point €50 – €200: Beyerdynamic DT250 (250 Ohm version !) / DT990-Pro, Audio Technica ATH-M50 (later versions), Goldring DR150, Sennheiser HD555/558, Roland RHA-30, Fischer Audio FA-003, Logitech UE600
Higher price point €200 – €500: Sennheiser HD580/HD600/HD650/Momentum, Beyerdynamic DT880/DT990, Denon D2000, AKG K551, Shure SRH840, HifiMan HE400 – HE500, Philips Fidelio X1, KEF M500.
For Hifi there are HiFi headphones. For kids there are 'look at me' headphones (stylish all bass no highs), they are not suited for hifi. For DJ's there are DJ headphones, they are not suited for hifi. For gaming there are gaming headsets (mic added e.t.c.), generally not suited for hifi. For monitoring there are professional monitoring headphones, 90% of them is not suited for hifi.
buy a hifi headphone for hifi and a gaming headphone for gaming and watch movies using your RS180.

Is stx as a dac good enough for hd 650? With ember as an amp.
Where do I find a 5m extension cable?
Is there a significant difference between how hd 600 and hd 650 sounds or are they close with minor differences?
Thank You

Unlike with the Ember thread.... all the info you seek is already ON the web as the HD650 is already an 'old' design. There are as MANY different opinions about HD600 vs HD650 (and ALL the other headphones around) as there are about tubes, capacitors, opamps, DACs etc. Just use GOOGLE(For Gods sake !) AUDITION the headphones you MIGHT be interested in. Use your browser and read the opinions IF you value them. ALL the questions you ask(ed) have been asked (and answered) a 1,000,000 times before already.

Hi Techboy,
I read your 1st. post in this thread and thought "Wow, someone's been dropping sensible pills in his tea", and, I'll be honest here, I was a little disappointed.
But you didn't fail me!! Your second post in the same thread is back to the comedy gold we've all grown to know and love. Superb! Keep it up! Ian and Frans love it!
PS - Have you thought about the Sennheiser Orpheus system? It might be just what you're after!

That's a lot of money for a HD650 but it is a good headphone.
I have been happy with one for many years. Together with the HD600 it is one of the few headphones around that don't really need modifications and is one of the best measuring (performing) headphones around.

The retail price even in USA is $500. It is priced around that anywhere in the world. Also, I have ordered an Asus Essence One Muses edition for the source. It costs $900 in USA but $750 in India. It is supposed to be one of the better DACS within $1k. Between, HD 650, Ember and Muses, I have an end game setup And I am upgrading my speakers to Aktimate Mini+ by the end of the month which is a huge step from Micro, since I used to own Mini+ earlier, so I know the difference. With that I will be really happy Thank You so much! Aakshey

If you are going to use the ASUS from a PC or laptop (powered via mains) you should consider buying an USB isolator. Something like this for instance www.olimex.com/Products/Modules/Interface/USB-ISO/or: www.circuitsathome.com/adum4160-usb-isolator-assembly-guideIt may or may not give sonic improvements but in any case will break the groundloop, at least when powered from a LINEAR power supply. It should be very clear that this will ONLY help in breaking groundloops which is a problem not everyone has but some might. Other tricks like interrupting the 5V line in a USB power cable and/or inserting a low value resistor in ground lines won't break the (possible) groundloop. These remarks are only valid for USB audio and are related to breaking groundloops ONLY and nothing else. I make NO comments on what it will or won't do in terms of Sound Quality and will leave that to more experienced and knowledgeable (noted) people in specialised forums.
