Little story connected to these headphones:
Somewhere in '94 I was in a recordingstudio to record the very first demo of the band I played in back then. In their control room there were very nice Sony headphones: MDR750's. When I came back home I said to my wife: "I want them !" After a few weeks, to surprise me, she went to a store where they didn't have MDR750's and the salesman sold her these MDR CD570 instead as being the 'successor'... yeah right
She gave me the wrapped package and I had an idea what it was, when I opened it I started to go off: "This is not the one, it's supposed to be 750 not 570" It was when I got over it that I put it on and heard that the sound sig almost the same as the 750, dut these were more design-ish. So I started to use them and got used to them. But friends said it sounded weird, couldn't get my finger on it but after some years I discovered that these have very vivid highs and deep, non punchy bass. That's what made them weird sounding.
Specs:
Closed headphones.
40 mm driver
40 ohm impedance
Frequency respons 5 hz - 30 khz (Sony specs)
Build quality:
Self-adjusting headband, probably stolen from AKG but what the heck. There's rubber surrounding the headband which makes it quite comfortable. The cups are single side connected to the hinges with gives them freedom to tilt in every direction. The rods are also covered with rubber. The stock earpads were extremely soft and completely adjusted to the shape of my head. But those earpads where also the big downside of these HP. After a few years the vinyl covering started to come off, leaving dandroft around my ears. Even later the inner seems let loose exposing the internal foam and they looked like this:
So they got trown aside and I stopped using headphones all together. But now and then I did use them when needed and the sound was completely different then I remembered. Thinner, less bass.
A few months back I started looking for replacement pads and discovered there were non. Dissapointment came over me cause after all, they were a gift from my wife.
Meanwhile I got my Superlux and changed the stock pads with velours pads. Then I took a good look at those stock Superlux pads and realized they could fit these Sony's if I pulled them over the cups instead of trying to cramp them into the tiny slot. How does it look ? Not bad at all:
So finally my old Sony's got a new life.
Comfort:
Like I wrote earlier, the stock earpads were very soft, thus providing great comfort. They also have a nice clamping force, so don't squeeze your head. The self adjusting system works fine and these phones are easily wearable for hours in a row. I know cause I did so.
These days these headphones are mainly used by my 15y old daughter when she's watching movies on the computer. These sessions sometimes last for 5 hrs in a row and she says these headphones keep on feeling comfortable. I'll take her word for it
Sound (with Superlux earpads):
Bass: No punch, but real deep. The lower mid-bass is lacking a lot, that's why it's not punchy.
Mids: Very clear mids, maybe a tad too much. But it's something I've heard with many Sony headphones.
Highs: Extremely bright high frequenties are audible, but not piercing. It's clear, clear, clear !
Overall: The very clear highs and mids, in combination with the deep, non punchy bass makes it sound strange. They're very open sounding for closed phones with a fine stereo image.
Got to add that with the disintegrated earpads bass was almost unexisting and they sounded awfull, like the exposed foam sucked up much of the sound. So with these Superlux pads it improved shockingly.
