Frans has kindly sent me a new Kameleon filter to build for my DT770 - 80ohm version, with extra gain. The new boards are all one sided as compared to the previous boards, they are also of excellent quality. New board below, with the required components - just need to find a spare hour to actually solder the parts together Old board - 250 ohm version:

I started work on my filter board and almost straight away one of the SMD resistors jumped of the board on a suicide mission and it took me 3/4 of an hour to find it. Have a rest I thought and try again the next day. Everything going to plan that day until one of the really small 0805 4K7ohm resistor R5L did the same and for the life of me I cannot find it. I carried on and it was not until I had almost finished the board I noticed a really stupid mistake. So can any of you Kameleon geeks spot the mistake? I will have to stop soldering stuff while drinking beer

Thanks to Frans, who so kindly sent me two replacement 4k7 resistors to finish the job, I have now completed the filter board, but again with trouble with the 4k7 resistors. Who-ever invented the 0805 SMD resistor wants shooting every day at dawn for a week The first one jumped straight out of the packaging with hardly touching it - never to be seen again. The second one managed to make it to the PCB 3 times and 3 times it jumped off but I luckily found it and finally got it soldered in place. (not the best photo) I bought myself a new PCB holder from CPC to replace my home made one at about £5 and it is superb, really well made and makes soldering easy. For anybody who is interested the link is here: cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d03170/pcb-holder/dp/SD02126The filter in place in my Kameleon: I am now going to have a couple of hours listening to it, along with a few cold beers

I decided I needed some new pads for my DT770's, as you can see from the picture below they were getting a little grubby even after a wash. They were also getting uncomfortable to wear for long periods. The inner foam discs had holes in them. The new EDT 770 VB pads from Thomman link have a lot thicker foam inserts and come at a reasonable £18.80 + £8 postage. The old pads had compressed by about 6mm compared to the new ones.
All done - new pads fitted in about 10 minutes. A quick try on and the comfort has been restored. Not sure if I will hear any difference in sound though?

The black version does look better. There is a very slight measurable difference between the silver and black EDT770 pads.

I also had a good listen last night and I never thought I would say this, but they sounded so much better. The first thing I noticed was the bass, I'm not a bass head but I did not realise how much bass was missing - probably down to a bad seal with the compressed pads? Overall it was well worth the money because I had never changed pads on headphones before and I was a bit sceptical of how much difference they can make, but now I know I won't hesitate to change them again.

driver-ear distance and the foam changing its density has an influence on the sound. Fresh pads usually bring the sound back to how you got them. As the changes are slow you generally don't notice the gradual changes over time or chalk it up to burn-in.

I recommend getting hold of a couple of Amiron Home "fixing rings" for the dt770. "Fixing rings" are the rings you fit the earpads on. They make it significantly easier to change pads and you get a deeper cup with better seal and a deeper soundstage to boot. The ekstra distance added between the ear and the driver adds a bit to the soundstage.

Alas they seem sold out (cost only 1.42 Euro excl. shipping) Beyer site says this. SOLD OUT Fixing ring For fixing the ear pads with the housing The ear pad have to be pulled over the fixing ring Fits: DT 1770 PRO DT 1990 PRO T 5 p (2nd Generation) HS 800 I expect the rings in the DT770/880/990 that hold the foam need to be removed and these are mounted instead ?

Exactly. Btw: new pads for amiron come with the fixing ring mounted in the pads...

There is a big difference between DT990/DT880 pads and DT770 pads. Just like there is a big difference between DT1770 and DT1990 pads so these aren't interchangeable. I haven't taken a look at where Amiron pads 'sit'. Closer to DT1990-B or DT1770 ? Perhaps Amiron Home pads (being an open headphone) are compatible with 880/990/1990 and Amiron Copper/Wireless, being closed) may have pads closer to DT770/1770 ?

I haven't tried the amiron pads on my dt770. I bought an amiron some months ago with two ekstra sets of spare earpads. I returned the amiron to Thomann. I put a new set of earpads on the amiron I returned to Thomann, and therefore had a used set with fixing rings. I took the fixing rings and put them on my dt770 and put the dt770 pads on.

I have just tried the amiron pads on the 770... And oh no no no... not a good match. The amiron pads have 4 holes on the inside of the pads just like the "analytical" dt1990-pads have. The sound from the 770 with these pads is a flat, upper mid centric, cheap 80's transistor radio kind of sound. But they might be fine with the open dt's, as you suggested above.
