I have very little opportunity to listen to the very best headphones but yesterday I was able to listen to the LCD-3, LCD-2 and the LCD-XC. The latter two were good but I was blown away by the LCD-3.
The LCD-3 is quite pricey at $1945 and twice the price of the HE-6 which, according to reviews, may be just as "likeable".
I'd like to hear the thoughts about these two headphones, using the Garage1217 amps, if anyone has had the opportunity to compare them.
I presently have a Sunrise II, but I can upgrade that if necessary.

The HE6 is somewhat 'clearer' than the LCD-3 The membrane of the LCD3 is lighter than LCD'2s and has a higher peak in the top end. You could consider the HE560 it is cheaper as well and seems to be a formidable headphone (not heard it) and is easily driven. It appears to sound like a much improved HE500. I liked how bass and mids sounded on the LCD2 but it lacked in the treble area where the 3 is somewhat better. The filter can brighten them up and make them clearer sounding. If you listen to it exclusively the brain can also adjust for the 'lack' of treble energy and on some recordings a lack of treble may be desirable as well (think HD650)

Frans, thank you for the input.
I was blown away primarily by the top end of the LCD3 (compared to the LCD2) which as you mention is facilitated by the lighter membrane.
I read up on the HE560 and it sounds like it might be right up my alley, but I suspect Hifiman might have some problems with them....at least they've removed the preorder page from their website so it doesn't look good for the near future.
I'll still consider the HE6 which I can get for $995 which is only $100 more than the HE560 MSRP but I suspect I would try an Ember if I did this.
I'll also see what it would take to build a filter for the LCD2. If I can hold myself down for awhile I may just build a filter and check the LCD2 again.

I think both the HE-6 and LCD2/3 are excellent headphones that both improve with EQ/filter.
The HE6 needs a powerful amp to shine though, the LCD's are easier to drive.
The filter makes the LCD2 less 'dark' while retaining the wonderful lows and mids which is what I really appreciate in the LCD's.

Well, I went and did it. I was able to get a good price on the LCD-3s so I ordered them. Should be here Saturday.
I'll be interested to see what my perceptions are when tube rolling with the 3s.
Do you have an idea which output setting on the Sunrise II is likely to be best with them?

LCD3 can reach 120dB on the SR-II in low output R setting With a filter PCB it will sound even better.

I don't know if he has some in stock. If he hasn't any stock and if you want bare PCB's (no components on it) it may be cheapest to buy them from me directly as you only pay the shipping costs one time. For ready made filters Jeremy will be best.

I know that Jeremy is extremely busy. Can I just go ahead and buy them from you?

Jeremy is very busy right now, I asked about a filter for the Senn hd650's but he was a little busy with all the things on his plate. How would a filter affect the sound of the Sennheiser hd650's?

You can have a listen to it without having a filter yet. Download the file 'original' and 'Play only on HD650' and have a listen to the changes it makes. [a href=" www.filemail.com/d/vwolzakhaiznckx"] www.filemail.com/d/vwolzakhaiznckx[/a] The files are only available for 2 more days. There's also a file for DT990 pro (other download link, see Kameleon thread), a Bass-boosted file and (modified) T50RP file. The filter PCB will do a slightly better job on the T50RP than the Kameleon does. The HD650 will give a similar improvement.

Thank you for the files solderdude, I see that to me it seems to open up the sound some, especially the vocals. A little clearer, treble area is much improved, I will have to get one of these when they become available.
