This guy seems to explain all the reasons not to get one and then says it's one of the best Audio Technica!!

I don't know. Thought it was quite a positive review on the whole but he did point out some things that may limit their suitability for some musical tastes or usage. Judging by what he says about isolation it appears the MSR-7 not only knocks off the MDR-1A's design but it's inability to block out external noises too!! I find a lot of Z's reviews lack a lot (or any kind) of focus or structure whereas this guy at least seems to do a decent job in that regard. But he's also not the character Z is which I suppose is why Z has developed a bit of a cult following. On a more serious note. Whoever designed those left/right badges should have been shot!!

Talking of the Beyer if they were to make a 250 ohm Ltd Ed with a straight cable and black pads, like they did with the DT990, I'd be in like a shot. So close and yet so far.... DT770 Pro LE

The black dt990 looks nice and so does that, Mark. That's the 80 ohm version.
I slightly prefer the msr7 in terms of sound. That's because it's actually more balanced with better mids. The DT770 is a great headphone but does have the Beyer sharp top plus a large bottom ........... end. That means the mids go back, but both are good.
I just went between the two and for me, the MSR7 is better tbh.
Both have a strong treble. Bass is huge on the dt770 and to my ears, about right on the msr7. In fact the bass on the msr7 seems deep although graphs suggest it's not. I have no idea why that is tbh.
Treble on both can get shouty. Probably more on msr7.
Msr7 mids are better without a doubt.
For me, the mids are very important because that the focus area for volume. I get the mids to make everything sound present and then adjust until the treble starts to shout and back off. That way, you can listen to the msr7 at a healthy volume for impact while not getting the scream factor. Then you also get a good slam.
If you do that with the Beyers, you can end up juggling for presence and treble scream.
So for me, the msr7 is better. I do wonder whether some might get a poor seal because the cups are quite small, which does make them sound much less full.
Not a great deal to choose between the two for isolation either. Closed headphones aren't really that efficient at shutting out noise without a tight clamp so I prefer noise cancelling headphones for that and don't mind a drop in quality if the noise is gone.
I do think that the msr7 is worth having, but the price is high. It is built extremely well and sound is probably my best portable. The reviews are kind of off putting and to me, seem slightly overstated now that I have been using one. I'll be getting my own one soon, which I don't normally do after borrowing a headphone since they often turn out to be a disappointment in some way.
I disagree with that guy about orchestral too. They seem fine to me. Biggest problem for many would be the fit since my ears just go into the cups. I love the way that it doubles up as a home headphone with the long lead but I wish that they had supplied an attenuator because they are very sensitive and more often than not, I end up on a portable amp rather than the Polaris.
Another one that comes to mind is the Vmoda. MASSIVE bass but very good isolation. In fact, better isolation than the other two I think. I changed the pads on mine to the XL for comfort, but the bass can be a bit much on them. Real blasters!!!
The large pads might relieve the bass whumph a bit though but they are like having 2 speakers in each ear. One for mids and treble and a huge sub woofer which kicks off at the first opportunity. Trouble is, it's hard not to like them. Kind of indulgent.

He's an off beat reviewer who reviews headphones by going on about cables and pads and doesn't 'really' say that much about the headphone!! He's quite a character and makes YouTube videos and keeps cussing on them as well!!!
I see that there is an msr9 on the way now too!!

Yes, he did Simon. They are about average tbh. (As most closed headphones are.) If you want to hear a dt770, I could always send you one if you like. Isolation though isn't much better and if I'm honest, the msr7 is better.
After what you asked for, I've looked around and closed headphones that are portable are a minefield.
Given that isolation is much of a muchness between them, I prefer the msr7 sound tbh.
Anyway, you're welcome to try the DT770 if you want to. Just pm me and I'll get a pair off to you.

I would take Ian up on his kind offer Simon, I did many moons ago and he ended up giving me the DT770's which I still own toady I really like the DT770's - they have a good open sound for a closed back headphone and isolation is not bad at all, they are also very comfortable. I recently made a filter for my DT770's for use with my portable Kameleon and it does address the problem of the bass bleeding into the mids and also taking out the treble spike. Once filtered with the portable Kameleon they are a great headphone for me. I have never heard any headphone dearer than about £100 so I don't have much experience with headphones. On a personal level though I listen to my DT770 most of the time through my Samsung phone / Kameleon set up and occasionally my Philips Cityscape. I only use headphones for portable use. The DT770's are maybe a little large for portable headphones, but if like me you will only use them around the house, then they are very good. I will be surprised if you do not like the DT770 especially once filtered (thats if you have a portable Kameleon?) Take Ian up on his kind offer and let us know what you think

I was actually about to PM Ian re. the possibility of creating a 'for free' thread within the Classifieds that regulars could use to offer unwanted items. Probably needs a few rules as I've seen other forums plagued by chancers who sign up to blag stuff. Have a few things I'd chip in myself including a pair of Trinity Vyrus. If you wanted to try some IEMs (you may already have of course) and / or compare isolation with Ian's DT770 you are welcome to them Simon

Great idea Mark.
I've set it up and locked out non members. We'll give it a go and if it's of no use, I'll just take it out again. No problem.
New ideas to make this place not only 'feel' different (as it does compared to other places) but also to add to our hobby and enjoyment will only make it better and attract more like minded people hopefully.
Another idea I've often thought about is a conference call arranged on Skype, where we can show each other gear etc and of course, it's free. That way we can see gear and talk about it as well as communicate socially. That could be arranged through a closed area and times announced. None members wouldn't be able to access the board announcing it and also couldn't get into a Skype call without permissions.
I was even thinking about trying to capture the Skype calls and then posting them as a video on here for others to then watch at a later date, but not able to take part unless given permissions. Trouble is, I don't think that many can access a group call on Skype at one time. Even ten might be difficult.

Thanks for that Ian. It's something that's worked well on a couple of other forums so hopefully will do here too and I think it's in keeping with the community spirit we have on DIYAH.
Despite my love of tech and gadgets I've never actually used Skype believe it or not! But I do like the idea of being able to converse in real time without correcting my constant typos so definitely interested if it looks feasible. Time differences, work/family commitments etc. may mean that group size isn't much of a problem.

It's not hard to set up but is reliant on your internet speed. I have just over 50mps here so it is no problem to host. You basically set yourself up with an account and then find the other person and request to be in contact.
No one can break in unless the request has been accepted so it's a closed system.
It's a learning curve but before anyone went on for real, it would be easy to check beforehand that all was well.
I don't know if there's a way to grab the video and audio to make a postable video here, but I guess I could use a video camera although it might be crappy quality!! Don't know.
Basically just to show/discuss gear or whatever and of course, have a laugh.
Just adds another dimension.

Sounds good. My kids use Skype all the time so they'd keep me right. Connection speed shouldn't be a problem as we average around 40Mbps down / 8Mbps up. Some helium beer would liven things up a bit

I've also never used Skype before although I'm no stranger to Facebook Messenger & Apple Facetime. My internet connection is only 13MB though so a conference call is probably beyond my capability. Thank your lucky stars.
