These ones sound a bit honky, a bit veiled and a bit compressed, but otherwise quite linear. Isolation is pretty good.

The headphones arrived! I left my laptop at work with all my music so I will test them properly tomorrow, but first impressions using my phone are very good :-)
The isolation is great, that is exactly what I will need in the office from January. Thanks Frans!

Thanks Frans! I am so envious-I won't be able to listen with mine until next Friday. I should never have gone on holiday.

You're in luck. I just got in another one (black/brown). Have pads lying around but don't know when I have time to modify it.

I would like to add two things that have impressed me from the modified units: soundstage (depth) and sub-bass quality :-) In fact the soundstage is deeper than in the he400i! I am extremely happy with them!
BTW,they sound MUCH better when I don't wear glasses, I think those open slightly the pads on the side.

Just had my modded Philips on for 30 minutes with my X3 and am delighted. Expansive, live venue-like, holographic sound-stage, sweet, sweet treble, detailed too, and that bass-well I entirely agree with Tunkejazz. They are also exceptionally comfortable-more so even than my Bose QC15, my usual 'travelling' cans, and better sound. Sound isolation is very good for a passive, closed can. Looking forward to trying them on my home system this evening.

When Frans recommends something, it can't be bad

The phones are not that big so I can let the glasses rest on the top of the can without degrading the image quality. I look like a nerd though...but probably I am a nerd anyway!

Have been using my modded Philips all weekend, avoiding the storm outside. They are exceptionally comfortable with well above average noise isolation. I couldn't even hear the howling of the gale. Music flows effortlessly and naturally; neutral, detailed, dynamic, with great bass presence which never muddies the mids, and all in a generous sound-stage. When I read how the originals sound this mod is pure magic. Thanks Frans.
