I found time to have another go at stopping the creaking noise, first of all I googled what would be good to lubricate plastic to plastic and one thing that came up was white litium grease. I thought grease may be better as it is more solid. Off to the local Screwfix store and purchased a tin of WD40 white litium grease for £6.50: Stripped everything down again and and cleaned the joints with alcohol till it dripped out of the other end. Once dried I squirted the joints with the grease until it bubbled and finally settled down and also til it dripped out of the other end: Checked to see if it still creaked and nothing, having said that it did not creak when I put the silicone in either On assembly I noticed it sarted to creak as I put the drivers back together, so thought what the hell, squirt some grease around them too, the phones are useless as they are. Assembled everything back together and checked again for creaking - YAHOOOOOOOOOOO not a murmer Cleaned everything up with alcohol and tested to make sure they still work ok - I am surprised the thin wires to the drivers stayed soldered on And what more appropriate song to try them out than: Stunning. I am well chuffed that these great headphones are back to normal and look forward to having a really long listen through them again. Thanks to Frans for showing me how to get into the drivers to mend them. Also is there anybody out there that can reccomend a good replacent headband to cover these, I tried the ones from my Beyer DT770's thinkg they might fit but they are far too small. Headband measures 40mm width by 350mm length.

Glad you got it creek-free.
Now you have a working set of cans and a spray can that obviously can.... you are the man.
No tips on the headband alas.

No tips on the headband alas. Trying to find a headband cover is a nightmare Frans I thought this cover might look good, with it being brown to match the headphones To be serious now, I thingk I am going to make my own from modified car seat belt protector covers, you can pick a couple up for about £3 from Ebay - got to be worth a try?

The Seat belt protector pads arrived yesterday, £2.50 for 2 inc free delivery - what more can I say Looked at the phones again and realised they were in worse shape than I first thought, the otherside were even more worn: I did not think I had worn them that much? The pads are well made for the money and have velcro fastening, perfect for what I want - easy to fix on the phones and easily removed if I need to wash them I fixed one of the pads to the phones last night and they are a pretty good fit and also wore them like that for about an hour last night - they were very comfortable So my next job is to carefully measure the headband and to cut down each pad so they need to be joined in the middle of the headband. Its been about 40 years since I last sewed a button on a shirt, so my sowing skills may be a little rusty, but I am confident that these pads will do the job very cheaply

Just joined so I could say thanks for this thread, and post what I did. I've been upgrading my portable setup recently, and was looking for a set of portable cans. Pulled my portapros, sony DRZX701IPs and finally my uptowns out, and gave them all a listen. Portable setup is now a ibasso dx50 and a alo audo rx iem amp. The amp doesn't have that much gain, but it's dead quiet. I liked the uptowns, but they were too u shaped. Found this thread, looked through my stuff, and found some 1/16" thick felt (about 2mm) and a pair of the shure 940 pads. Added felt around the driver, and put on the 940 pads. I thought it lost too much bass like this, but maybe because I didn't have any weatherstripping to add to make the 940 pads fit better, they were kind of big. So I tried a pair of hm5 pads I had. They fit perfectly, had to do a little stretching to get them on but really are a good fit. And they are very comfortable. Other thing was my felt was too big, covered the holes I wasn't supposed to cover, so I trimmed down the felt quite a bit and they only cover the driver. The lows were back now. Maybe a little more boosted than I like, I need to listen more and decide. But they sound really good now, much better then you would expect for a $50 can. I was thinking about buying another portable can for $100 or so, now I'm good with these. I had to rewire them when I bought them, they came with broken wiring. Thanks

The driver is quite nice indeed.
You made it dual entry. Did you just drill 2 holes in the cups ?

I did it a while ago, but I think I just drilled one hole.
Used the original cable hole for one side, and then added a hole for the other side. Was the easiest way to rewire them. Since they came with broken wiring, I had to do something. I put some hot glue at the wiring hole on the inside, to seal the hole and to provide strain relief for the wire.

Hey Frans, I need your help again. I was listening to my philips headphones today and the adjuster on one side kept falling down, it is really slack. Could you please advise me on the best way to tighten them back up so that I don't break them Cheers Chris Attachments:

Something inside the headband must be broken. I tried to access mine via the plastic parts on the headband but no luck.
I have a not modified one with a terrible looking headband but functioning headband. You could use this as a parts donor.
