been considering a set of these to add to my collection. not worried about portable use so looking at the 250 or 600 ohm versions. i notice the 600's are a tad more money. found the 600's discounted at the moment and tempted. are they any better than the 250's?

I've read that the 600 ohm version is supposed to be a bit better in the top end than the 250 ohm, which has quite a spike up there. It is a 'v' shaped sound, but I quite like it myself. I must admit, I quite fancy a 600 ohm version. At least noise would be a long way distant through that kind of impedance!!

That's the newer version Simon. The old version looks like the black dt990. (Like mine) Those silver ones are the most recent. That's a good deal too.
Some have had issues with rattling drivers.
From headfi...
The 600Ohm model is the definitive version of the DT990 and has the smoothest treble of the DT990 line. It’s also the most detailed treble of all three lines and offers the most extension. The midrange of this model is close to the 250Ohm DT880 and is rather shallow, but far more improved over the 250Ohm DT990. The DT990 600Ohm’s mids are a little bit more transparent and detailed over its 250Ohm counterpart, but not nearly as full sounding as the 600Ohm DT880. The DT990 still has a slightly more detailed midrange over the 600Ohm DT880. Bass on this model is just insane. It has so much impact and is so tight and controlled sounding it makes you question that’s it’s an open headphone. Also the bass is very snappy and fast, far faster sounding than the other DT990 variants. Really just the most impactfull and controlled bass I’ve heard from an open headphone. The soundstage also beats all the DT770 and DT880 models and is pretty wide and deep. The imaging though is just a bit better than the 600Ohm DT880, but not by much.
Is 'Scan' a trustworthy company? I've seen mixed reviews about them.

Just in case you start to look towards the 250ohm: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beyerdynamic-DT990-Pro-Headphones-Black-Limited-Edition-/291882626389?hash=item43f58f6d55:g:4JUAAOSwr7ZW3a1uUnlike the other Pro versions this one has a straight rather than coiled cable. And the all black colour scheme looks nicer There is a filter for the 250ohm too so perhaps that narrows any differences between the two further? The filter does make for a far more balanced sound but personally I quickly ditched the filter and just enjoyed them 'as is'. They are v-shaped but boy they're an enjoyable listen and eager to please. Some amps can bring out the treble peak a bit more than others though. The best pairing for me was the Ember + a smooth sounding Amperex tube which smoothed the treble out nicely. Edit: SCAN are generally okay tbh. Have heard of a few folk having bad experiences but I think because they are quite vocal on forums etc. things get blown out of proportion. And it's also cool to bash them as unfortunately there name is easy to poke fun at e.g. don't buy from SCAM. Personally I've used them a few times over the years with absolutely no issues. Delivery is fast, they pack stuff well and the only time I've had an issue (an expensive GPU that was faulty) they RMA'd it and issued a refund with no bother. I think part of the problem is that they primarily deal with PC parts and it's always a grey area when something goes wrong e.g. did a component arrive D.O.A. or did the end user install it incorrectly or damage it? Perhaps they point the finger towards the user too often and generally when it comes to customer service companies like OCUK (great bunch) are simply better.

The Ember just seemed to make them friendlier Ian and I could happily listen all day. With the Polaris and Mojo things became a little harsh and shouty.
So I think the Ember leaving sealed the 990's fate really....funnily enough they both went to the same home. And the new owner (gadgie) seems to really like the pairing too!

have bought from Scan in the past too. configured a pc, which came very quickly. had 2 motherboards die, sorted very quickly each time under warranty. would not hesitate to buy something as simple as this from them.
its getting them through "customs" which could be a problem.

You have that problem too Simon? I usually try and wait and get things delivered on days when the customs officer is at their other job or the hairdressers

I usually try and wait and get things delivered on days when the customs officer is at their other job or the hairdressers funnily enough she just walked in and see me looking at the headphones on scan and never uttered a word! now if that isnt a green light , i dont know what is! trouble is i want to try some of the mainstream brands that i have not heard before, open and closed and with filter modules (if available) at the moment i am after dt770 and 990, then i want to try some akg's though have not researched which models yet. i dont intend buying anything expensive, just similar price range to the beyer's i've mentioned. ideally i would like to buy "used" to keep cost down further, and preferably from a forum over ebay.

I owned a pair of the 600 ohm version for a short time. Before the Ember or other amps I own now. I think I might have been using a Headroom amp. I sent them packing. I could never get used to the treble. Might have been a mismatch with the amp. Just not to my liking. Harsh and shouty on mid-fi recordings. My ears got fatigued quickly. But I know a lot of people really like them. A good reminder to try and audition before you buy. Or make sure you can return them.
