My reference is the electrocompaniet EMC-1 Up CD player. I've compared the electrocompaniet to EAR acute 3/Hegel HD25/AMR 777 and to other lower level DACs and CD players. I preferred the electrocompaniet to all the others because of it's natural sound , smoothness, clean sound and good bass. The soekris sounds better than the electrocompaniet. It's more natural sounding - evident especially in vocals. Better separation of instruments - Better imaging. The whole sound image is cleaner. Generally everything sounds more real.

I'm not familiar with the Electrocompaniet models you mention but your description of the Soekris sound is about what I would expect for a really nice R2R DAC.
