wow that was a bargain. would have fancied them had i not got the d600 I want DIYAH people to benefit Simon. We have GREAT guys on here and I want people to benefit if possible. I still like the d600 a helluva lot. In fact, I've been using them today from a Neco Bossfet for the radio. The forum can only be as good as the guys and the posts they put on here. I'm very happy how we've progressed from the start and it's been like a showcase of manners and respect. That'll make this place in the end. I really want people to get good deals and benefit from being members since there are a few here who really put a lot of effort in to make the place informative and friendly. Chris, the k550 bass rises with impedance output, once Frans has done his magic. However, my preference is for the bass to be raised from complete flat. Especially on K550. Frans completely understands but for me, it just brings in a more speaker like frequency response. Since you like the DT770 (me too), you may well like even a 5db raise. The Dt770 has a very big bass by comparison. Obviously Frans is the expert here and he can advise as to whether that is possible. Please feel absolutely no obligation. I will hold them here and see how Frans sees it from a tech viewpoint. He KNOWS what he's doing, I just know my own preferences since I've used headphones for a long time.

The DT770 has MUCH more bass than stock/modded K550.
The K550/551, once modded are very flat and neutral. The deep bass is there but only on recordings that actually have it. With the DT770 this is also 'true' BUT the bass is much more prominent but to my ears a bit 'one-note'-ish.
I suspect the modified Philips uptown would be more fun. Never heard the D600 but I think they may share some traits except the D600 is much bassier/fatter sounding. Perhaps the treble on the D600 is slightly smoother though.
Ian has both and can compare comment.
I have a bunch of uptowns here already + pads so will be modding them and put some up for sale (cost price). Much prefer the Philips over the K550/DT770 and it is closed but doesn't sound closed at all.

They'll really suit you Chris, and way cheaper. I have a couple here and the Philips are really really good.

I will take your recomendation and go for a pair of the Philips Uptown if you have the FB version Black/Black? If you do can you PM me with a price for the phones + Modding + postage. Cheers Chris

Ian it was very understanding of you to hold the K550's for me but I will take yours and Frans advice and go for the Philips Uptown they will probably suit me better. You and Frans know your stuff about headphones whereas I know very little and normally like to listen through speakers. But I am finding myself listening more and more through headphones since I have been really busy at work. So please feel free to sell the K550's on to someone who wants them. Thanks again Chris

Ok Chris. My feeling is that the Philips would suit you better. Although they all go to near as possible to flat, they DO sound different and the Philips is way easier on the ear with very deep bass as well.

Thanks Ian, can you recommend a few recordings that have very deep bass for me to listen to - so long as it is not classical as I dont own any classical recordings - tell a lie I have a copy of Gustav Holtz the Planets.

Touch by YELLO Anything by Shpongle. Both electronic but they contain low stuff galore. I haven't really catalogued my music with deep bass. At the moment, I'm right into hi res and DSD which is truly amazing.
Tbh, bass when it's there will just appear while others will sound not a lot different, Chris. Some recordings lack deep bass so the headphones don't present any. You notice straight away on bass drums. They don't go 'boom', they go 'thwack' and your ears kind of 'feel' the impact.
Once you hear the really deep stuff, you'll start to find many headphones just lack real bass.
I use:
Th900 Senn hd650 Fostex T40/50 Philips Cityscape.
All of those produce deep bass except the Senn believe it or not, I'm lucky on here cos I can say what I like without fanboys .......
The hd650 gives too much mid bass which slightly interferes in the lower mids. It also kind of masks the treble so they seem to be (as so many say) veiled. The lower bass is rolled off on the Senns.
However, with a filter, the mid bass hump gets flattened while the lower bass is dramatically increased. The treble stays the same, but the masking effect of the mid bass hump gives the treble a chance to come through well.
The result is one of the best I've heard. Extended bass without bloat and a headphone that is amazingly clean sounding. Mids to die for and a really natural, musical sound that kind of disappears with the music. You just become less and less aware of the headphone with longer listening. No other headphone I have does that which is why I'm so keen on the filter.
So I'm keeping the Senns for One. In fact, I have two Senns!!! I'll be comparing my old one with a new one soon.
Once you hear that really deep bass, you kind of go off a lot of headphones!!
