I would need to know your settings: - Have you selected "DoP" in "SDM Pack"? for your DIYINHK this should be selected, for other adapters like Amanero it should be "none" - Have you "AltDSD" checked? should be uncheked - And "Pipeline DSD"? only to be checked with some PCs, notable multi core but slow CPUs. - What are you using for "Oversampling", "Modulator" and "Bit rate (/Limit)" on the main window? If going too far with the upsampling it may run out of processor. I suggest trying "-2S" filters to see if it helps - What are your selections under "DSDDIFF/DSDF settings"? If you have "DirectSDM" checked it won't process DSD, only PCM I tried a variety of settings but didn't keep notes. I did try the "-2S" filters but I might have had some of the other setting "wrong." I will try the setting you suggest and keep notes. I will also check CPU usage when I'm running HQPlayer. I've never used it in 8.1 but I expect its there.

I have always thought DSD sounded better than CD, but have been told by experts I am wrong. Are those the same experts that feel the best option the Ember has is the 'off' switch ? One should always trust their own hearing, not rely on that of others. wow, who was the idiot that said that about the Ember?

Here was me thinking I was getting 'ahead of the curve' by ripping all my music to hard drive and streaming them wirelessly to a network uPnP player. I don't have any Amaneros, 3rd-party drivers, or DSD's. I don't have any 12S, Sabre-32's, Wasapi or Asio's. I just pick up my Nexus, highlight an album, press Play, and listen to music.

The music is the important part, Jeff.
I have old wma files at 128k. Still listen to them and they're fine. Technology moves on and I enjoy the steps, but still retain my old music.

My daughters listen to their music through the speaker of their smartphones. They don't even care about the included earphones unless they are asked to use them. As to source, they are more than happy with the quality provided by Spotify and Youtube, they don't spend a peny and are fine with a little publicity. They are true music lovers who are EXCLUSIVELY concerned with music, IMO every one else is a verying degree audiophile, after all this forum is 99.9% audio related be it Headphones, amps, DACs, valves, apps and so on. My motto: Live and let live, whatever tickles your fancy, horses for courses, etc.

I've actually seen people walking along the pavement sharing a pair of Apple earbuds. One channel each.

I haven't had the chance but would love to! The only DSD capable DAC I've had on my hands could bareley do DSD128 without noise cripping in, standard DSD64 was the only playablef format wth it.

Personally, I prefer HQ Player. I feel that there might be a bit more feeling of 'space' in its playback.
Rather than listen to the music, listen to the acoustics of the room and attack on drums to see if you can hear what I get. Or attack on piano notes.
Foobar's a bit more intuaitive and easier to set up than HQ though

i recently contacted the maker of this player, over on CA via pm, to just ask about optimum settings for my system. that was 11 days ago and no reply. cant say i am overly impressed by this and am unlikely to pay for this product now.

Simon, you are more likely to get an answer if you ask openly in the HQPlayer thread at CA. Some time ago he used to answer all PMs but I guess these days he just gets too many to answer them, after all it is a one man operation.
On the other hand the app gets pretty good support; bugs are fixed quickly, new functions or filters are added often and improvements to existing filters, you can see if you check the home page, are released almost monthly.
