I'm thinking of buying some in-ears for more portable use, particularly with my phone. I just bought an LG G6+, which has their Quad DAC. I tried it with my 7XX and was pleasantly surprised with the sound. Apparently it really works well with 50+ ohm phones.
I have been looking at SoundMagic E50 and E80 iems, as they're high impedance and tend to have favorable reviews. Plus, they fit my "decent sound on a budget" mantra.
Anyone here have any personal experience with either of these?

Nice to finally see some 7XX measurements from your rig, Frans. I can't imagine it's been easy to find a set in Europe.
They really are quite enjoyable.

Between a full-time job, chores around the farm, helping my daughter in town, and acting in the occasional play, my days are pretty full. I usually sit down for a bit before bed to unwind for 30-45 minutes. That's my short listening session.
With the changes in seasons, we've been experiencing a few cold, windy, rainy days. I finally decided it was too crappy to be outside, and had the chance to sit back long enough to listen to 'The Wall' in its entirety in one sitting for the first time in ages. I had almost forgotten how well the entire album flowed from piece to piece. It was almost a rediscovery, really.
I'll occasionally drag something out that I had forgotten about, only to wonder why I haven't been listening to it for so long.
I guess that means I need to slow down and relax more often... Even if the weather is good.

Update: Sarah loves these headphones! She gets plenty of volume running straight off her laptop. These are also forgiving enough to use on less than stellar sources, which suits her online listening habits perfectly.
Also, I was wrong about the cable. It is removable, so I feel much better about that.

My daughter Sarah was in need of new headphones, but didn't want to spend a fortune on them or a separate amp. I searched the web for suitable cans in the $100 range and decided to try the HD 579, due to their mostly favorable reviews. Due to our rather remote location, mail order shopping was the only decent option. They arrived today, so I thought I would give them a quick listen before I transport them to their new owner.
Fit and finish are good. The silver body has the typical Sennheiser look and feel. Velour ear pads and a vinyl pad underneath the headband should make for many hours of comfortable listening. The cable is not removable, but it's long, supple, and terminated in a 1/4" plug. An 1/8" adapter is included.
Soundwise, they don't disappoint. The overall presentation is smooth enough that listening fatigue should not be an issue. The treble is crisp without any overt peakiness. Mids are very even sounding. Vocals are clean and forward. The bass is there. Less upper bass slam than my Grado SR80, but they go much deeper, although not quite as deep as my AKG K7XX. I can't detect any upper bass bleeding into the mids, so male voices are clean.
While the HD 579 don't have the resolution of more expensive phones, they have a very pleasant sound that should please most people looking for something in the $100 range. I think Sarah will like them.

Nevermind. I just saw they have the app for Android, also. Party on!

iPod only? I guess that won't happen. Oh well. Pity. Either way, great little speaker.

Old thread by now, but I finally took the plunge and ordered a Charge 3. We're just starting on another musical and decided it would be good to have something portable to use in rehearsal when our accompanist is away working with the pit band. This also gives us something to use out in our screened porch, which has never been wired.
The sound is far better than I would normally expect, had I not read your review. In fact, your review (and JBL's reputation) played a major role in my decision to choose the Charge 3. Needless to say, I'm not disappointed!
I may have to buy a second one in the near future. 😉

Sorry to disappoint. I'm not really that clever. I'm just here to round out the bottom of the curve.

Probably not too many hobby farmers on the board, but thought I'd share anyways.
Last summer, my baler broke, right in the middle of haying season. The main connecting rod that pretty much runs the entire operation broke in two. I had enough hay bales to last the winter at that point, so I just parked it and stewed over it for the winter, seeing as I don't have a shop to work in.
Today, we decided to pull things apart to see what all needed fixing. The connecting rod was deep inside the machine, so there was quite a bit of disassembly just to get to it. It was a bit challenging, actually. Fortunately, the break is pretty clean, so it will be easy to weld. We found some significant wear and tear in a few other components, as well as some bearings that were questionable.
I ordered the bearings for about $250, which isn't too bad, actually. The rest is welding, straightening, cleaning, and lubricating. With any luck, we'll get things back together next weekend.
Beats paying $95/hr shop wages.
Time to put on the headphones and relax.

Yeah ears differ between people and so do individual headphones unfortunately. That, they do! It keeps things interesting. I haven't had to buy any. We have boxes full of scraps from old sewing and crafts projects. Costs me nothing, really.

Whereas part of me is mildly amused by this, I mostly find the whole thing annoying and meaningless. It's like that stupid gold/blue dress from a while back. Perhaps it's because I'm jaded and sarcastic. Perhaps there's a reason I live out in the middle of nowhere.
I'm going outside to play in the dirt.

Decided not to as I know I would sell it anyway... the 2kHz peak would bother me. Actually, there is a peak somewhere around there Frans. I was listening on them this morning and it started to bother me as well, so I switched over to the k712 which by comparison is smoother sounding up there. Possibly closer to the HD600 sound with a slight lift up top with the k712. That peak seems to come and go according to what you’re listening to. (At least depending on the recording) and if there is any edge in the recording, it shows a lot on the k702. So I think you’re right.... it might set the tinnitus off!!! I have no way to measure, but the felt seems to lower the 2kHz peak a bit. I think it sounds smoother. In the end, it all comes down to perceived sound, IMO.

I have the K7XX, which shares many of the same qualities and flaws that the rest of the cans in this series have. The 2k and 7k spikes made them sound a little plasticy and tended to ring a bit on certain songs. I grabbed a scrap piece of craft felt and cut out some rings to match the stock foam filters. After many months of listening, I settled on one felt ring stacked over the stock foam. It loses a bit of "air", but the overall sound, to me, is quite a bit smoother than stock, and is quite worth it, for my tastes.
I think it's a mod worth trying for all the K7 series. Best of all, it's completely reversible!
Absolutely love these phones!

I figure it's about 14 miles line of sight to the tower. Approximately the same distance to the nearest fiber-optic line. I was told it costs about $20,000 per mile to lay fiber-optic cables. Only half a dozen families live on Minnesota Hill. Not much profit potential for the cost involved. Hence, wireless.
Seems to be running quite smoothly, so far. I can actually stream videos now!
