Zach from ZMF says different types of wood have "a slight effect on the timbre of the headphone, but does not affect the frequency response of the headphone. Things like decay, speed and transient attack are slightly affected by wood choice, while the frequency response attributes remain the same."
I guess it would be possible to detect very small differences in a test, but mostly the wood is for the looks. The different types of X00 are tuned differently and will sound mostly the same regardless of the wood you use.
Some people had wild experiences when changing cups...i have my doubts.

I was kinda skeptical about the sound quality. I understand the significance of some of these parts, but still, we came a long way since then, certainly there's much better stuff around.
Some tubes are amazing in modern systems, other components i imagine not so much. But still, was interesting to see the setup.

An interesting video of EVGA CEO's audio system.
From the description "tube amps (like the United 211), Audio Note Gaku-on hardware, Western Electric Horn 15As and WE555 drivers".
Some really interesting an unique gear, thought some of you guys might like it. (hope a thread for just a video is not a problem)

Changing pads on X00 is rather tricky from what i can gather. Most of my info is related to the EMU Teak, so it may not apply 100%
Some people like the Dekoni pads, most do not (for the X00, not in general). You also need the attenuation ring.
The ZMF pads have a much smaller impact on the sound - Ori and Eikon pads is what i've seen recommended. The lambskin is hyped, but their protein leather is very high quality and has some advantages (less heat, does not age).
I guess i should be glad because i find the stock pads very comfortable and any custom pads will change the sound.

The problem is not so much with the cable. Yes, other cables will transmit less friction noise, but it will still be annoying. The problem is with the way it's connected to the cup. That's harder to fix It's easier to not move or use Ian's way (if i remember correctly) and make a loop around the cup and zip tie it.

Interesting read even if the headphone is disappointing. Looks nice though. I wonder if they aim to make a product targeted at DJs for example or they just make it, realize is just bass and go "well, it's for DJs then". Also that channel imbalance means they don't care, right?

The headband seems very similar across all the Foster headphones and if there are any comfort issues, it's pretty easy to fix with the ZMF Pilot pad, many people recommend it for other headphones too. Also their pads seem to be pretty much the best around but at $60-$70 they are quite expensive. I'll try to get a second pair of original pads (just to have a spare) before considering ZMF pads.
Speaking of amps, i was considering the Lyr 3 but it's quite expensive. I got the rHead for about £160 and it seems like quite a quality amp for the price. Need to try a nice tube amp with the Teaks sometime in the future. Or maybe something like the ifi itube 2 as a tube buffer - i'm curious what it would add/change (in case i can hear it).

Yes Mark, this is the teak version with detachable cable. I'm trying to be really careful with them in order to avoid any gimbal issues. I've seen some hinges that cracked (on TH-X00 or other Fostex) but i'm sure that's just from drops and people not handling them properly.
They are quite amazing, running out of an Arcam rhead and dacmagic 100. Much lighter then they look, comfort is close to the HD650 for me. Really glad i decided to get them.

I can certainly relate, Ian. I've been avoiding forums lately (except for this one <3).
The only impression i get lately is of how unhappy people are. Just unhappy - with their gear and especially with other peoples gear, preferences and anything really. And music is rarely, if ever, mentioned. And they have these exaggerated claims in order to justify their own warped view...
I have close to no experience with high end headphones. I have, on the other hand, heard some pretty nice speaker systems, including custom made stuff upwards of $10k. Do i enjoy my studio monitors? Hell yes...making pancakes on a Saturday morning with my wife while listening to anything makes me really happy.
There was a thread a while ago on a Schiit glorifying forum about a guy's "audio journey". Basically, a few years ago he was extremely happy with the LCD2 (i think) and because he's financial situation allowed it, he wanted to improve (he's happiness). Now, after years with very high end stuff like Abyss, DNA Stratus (pretty much anything you can imagine) he managed to finally get some of that original enjoyment with a moded pair of HD650. Interesting journey but i think he lost something along the way...
When very expensive cable holders make a significant improvement to the sound, there's something wrong.
Can i hear the difference between $100 cable and a $5000 one? Nope, and i don't care if the more expensive one is coated in the tears of mermaids that add another dimension to the low end. I can't hear the difference between flac via asio/wasapi or streamed online. Do i care that other people do, even when measurements that go well beyond human abilities prove them wrong? Nope, not at all.
So yes, in this wonderful connected age where most people feel the urge to share everything in order to get a sense of self worth from the approval of strangers, i'll just turn the volume higher and enjoy the music.
I should stop rambling. Why have i posted this here...i have no idea.

They said the price will be 3-3.5k. I'll see if i can have a listen sometime since the company is from my hometown and i kinda knew the guy back in high school.
