That k7XX is frighteningly similar looking to my k712.
If it is the very same, I love the one that I have. Took it with me on holiday and have it on loan. When I get back, I think I'll be buying one. It's a tremendous headphone with deep bass and lacks the shrill top of the Akg k701. Really balanced and on a level IMO with the hd650. Bass is deeper than stock hd650 I think actually a bit more in the treble. Not as much treble as k701 with bigger bass But perhaps a fraction less wide in soundstage. Amongst my top headphones for sure and as good, if not better than the Senn.
It's like a big mellow K612 with such a low bass response.
Very balanced headphone so I'd have a problem selling the k7XX if I were you, Mark.
They do look very similar! I think I prefer the orange accents on the K712 to the stealth black look though.
I had originally been looking at the K712 but when the K7XX came up they just seemed to be too good to pass up on considering the much lower price.
I've heard conflicting reports. Some people seem to think the K7XX is a 're-badged' K702 Anniversary (current revision which uses the K712 pads) whereas others claim they are the K712. From the reviews I've read they sound more like the Annie as the way they're described sound closer to what I hear, whereas the K712 is sometimes described as bright, airy, ruthless with bad recordings and analytical....none of which describes the K7XX.
The one thing that all three have in common is bigger bass than any of their K/Q 701 & 702 counterparts. All three also use the same memory foam pads.
Although when you mention the K712 sounding like a big mellow K612 and that's exactly how I hear the K7XX, so even if they're not identical it sounds like they have very similar DNA.
The bass does extend really low for an open backed 'phone. There are only two others I've owned that come close - Fidelio X1 and the HE-560. The X1 was a bit of a bloated one note thumper by comparison (fun bass) and the HE-560 more detailed (quality bass). The mids I find quite similar to the HE-560 in that they are quite flat and not emphasised at either end. Sometimes I like that and other times I find it a bit boring and hankering for a bit of the sweetness the HD600 or HD650 mids offer.
Imaging is also excellent on these.
It probably has a better all round balance than either Sennheiser but being critical they are perhaps not quite as engaging. I could see it being a good compliment to either though.
The only reason I had considered selling was the Pandora, which I find betters the K7XX (and most of the 'phones I've owned to be fair) in most areas. Although the more relaxed and mellow nature of the K7XX does make it very easy to listen to esp. when paired with the Ember. Comfort is also great for longer sessions.
For now they're staying
