Seeing Frans write about this CD again I thought it was about time I bought it to have a listen.
I was surprised to see Amazon (.co.uk) have some SACD versions for sale for under £10. Just in case anyone still buys SACDs. I would if they could be ripped onto my Squeezebox system system.
Usually SACDs seem to go for £30+ used so I thought it was worth a mention.

The redbook version is already extremely good and revealing and is the recording I used in FLAC 44.1/16 playing from the line out of the X3 ... but don't tell anyone ! I used a lowly FiiO.
The recording was made almost 40 years ago and was done using analog tape recorder, the Nagra IV at 38 cm/s tape speed. They used Dolby A361 device for noise reduction. 2 Neumann U47 microphones were used spaced 20 cm apart at an 110-135° angle. Very close to a 'dummy head recording' but without a Jecklin disc.

The atmosphere captured on that recording is really remarkable. I have a CD of it and unfortunately ripping from SACD to Hi-Rez files is quite difficult. It's definitely one which can benefit I think from being in Hi-Rez on your dap.
Some of the playing is absolutely remarkable and the recording quality considering that it was done with just two microphones is incredible. There is also a sense of humour in some of the little snippets that they play. I love the false endings on one of the numbers I remember where they never seem to end.
Definitely an album worth keeping.

I had to Wiki 'Jecklin disc", fascinating stuff!
If I like the music on the CD I'll get the SACD for comparison.
I have a nice Ayre player that sees little use now, a shame really.
Jazz is one genre I can really love or really loathe, rarely anything in between.

Jazz can be hit and miss with me too Syd.
Hope all's well.
I'm stuck in the Scilly Isles at the moment. Can't fly out because weather is poor!!! Little planes get thrown around a bit too much in dodgy weather. Due in France but have to sit this out unless I fancy a mad dash, which I'm not keen on. Sea fog and low cloud.

I think I'd be happy to sit tight. If a pilot decides not to go it must be bad (relevent to the plane size). Hope it settles soon Ian. Syd

Hi Syd, picked this up on Head-fi
Quote...................
"Sony Playstation 3s with 3.55 firmware can take SACDs and make digital copies of them via a program called SACD Ripper. You can make ISO, or DSDIFF, or DSF file outputs, all of which the Foobar 2k player can read and playback (convert to PCM) with the SACD foobar plugin. Also you can burn a copy of the ISO to a standard DVD and play it on any SACD player that does not use the pit-reading-method (IIRC only Oppo DVD players, and the Oppo BDP-80 and BDP-83 can playback these ISOs as pure DSD through HDMI or analog outputs)." Hope that helps. Regards, Alan

The problem is that those PS3s are nowaday as rare as hens teeth and don't come cheap. As the PS3 cannot be easily flashed to a previous firmware it is critical to get a true 3.55 or earlier andd many advertised or sold as having it have been have in fact 3.60 or later. It is not easy to rip SACDs even with the right gear. The whole thing will most probably make sense only if you have a decent number of them though there are people offering to rip the discs (without making 2nd copies) at a reasonable price.

Thanks Alan, I see Javier has beaten me to it. I only have a few SACDs as I was finding that they often sounded no different to Red Book.
I think this has been confiirmed by measurments by reliable people. I'm guessing though that with the reputation of that particular recording they would do it right.
When Javier mentioned this a while back I tried to get the correct PS and finally gave up.
I'll try and find someone offering the rip service, good to hear they won't make 2nd copies, I'm a bit of a non-piracy supporter.
