i am after a cheap set of very compact active speakers, to be fed from my Ember's lineout. the audioengine a2 and a2+ are something i have been reading about. anyone on here tried them? other suggestions welcome. i believe the plus version has a built in dac, so would rather have the old plain a2. for a used set , my budget is <£150
these are only for the occasions when i dont want to wear headphones, so will not be a daily use item. cheers

Simon, I can hold them here for you as long as you want if you'd like to get the speakers.

this: www.thomann.de/gb/jbl_lsr_305.htmBUT they do hiss so can't use them close-up in a small quiet room. exceeding the budget by 50% though. These: www.thomann.de/gb/mackie_mr5_mk3.htmweren't bad either, a bit more musical and warmer than the JBL. The JBL is closer to the 'truth' though. Heard quite a few cheaper speakers and much more expensive and these 2 really stand out in terms of SQ.

Gordon/Frans thanks for the suggestions. i will look at these in the near future. but for now, with Ian's hd650 soon on the way, my next hifi purchase is likely to be a filter. cheers guys

I second Frans' suggestion of the JBL. They are surprisingly good for the money and I really like their (relatively) accurate presentation and they seem to extend quite well in the lower frequencies.
There is some moderate hiss but from where I sit (approx. 2 feet away) I can't say I really notice it even at lower volumes.
You do mention wanting something very compact and that'd be my only reservation about them. They're relatively big and weighty so best suited to a larger desk or stand mounting.

I can't say I've ever been a fan of active speakers. I've only ever heard cheap ones though so I've not got a lot of experience of them. Still, If it were me on the same budget I'd probably start trawling through eBay for decent compact speakers and a separate sreeo amp. YMMV.

Neither have I Gordon. Did originally toy with the idea of a separate amp + speakers but my desktop is just too small and cluttered already (<3ft wide). Just wasn't practical.
My expectations weren't all that high but the JBL's really sound better than I expected £200 to buy me. I'm primarily a headphone listener tho' so perhaps I'm a bit less fussy when it comes to speakers.

guys, i feel such a plank!!! i have been slowly removing items from my late Mum's house over the last few months and totally forgot that i have her hifi here. its a denon rcdm37 with dab and speakers. what an idiot i can be sometimes. its been tucked away in a box in the spare room for a couple of months now. it also has rca inputs so i can buffer it with the Ember. all i need is a pair of interconnects and a couple of speaker brackets. i cannot understand how i could forget that i had this. sorry for the wasted thread.
