had I trusted my ears, i would probably have gotten the 1770 months ago, but reading about beyerdynamic's QC and reliability issues (driver/cup rattling) and then SABF/changstar's measurements, especially in regards to bass distortion had put a damper on my desire.

Reading SBAF puts you off most headphones I think!! At least the behaviour has improved since Changstar went.
The one I heard seemed really good, although bass was pretty big.

I join this forum becos enthusiasm here is of the sighted, tempered kind

That's not a bad analogy! So long as you visit the detox centre before your local dealer hooks you up you're golden My headphone buying decisions are a bit like the angel & demon scene in Animal House. Usually the demon wins....

I thought that was a great reply. This place was started in order to have at least politeness and tolerance in the kind of posts that were sent out. Solderdude, Javier and myself decided that anything nasty would disappear quietly. It was the result of all kinds of mayhem in different places actually. You are right ..... Addict and detox. Having said that, I'm probably the nastiest here!!! I think we're more like the front room here!! I always felt that forums were either really technical boffin types, who accept only one kind of sound or nuthouses full of people arguing about who has the biggest lead or whatever. Great pity, because they then kind of sub divide into 'camps' of this and that. My own feeling is that DIYAH is more 'musical' in its outlook with the technical stuff still amongst the 'artistic drivel'. ...... Then again, I'm a bit biased I guess, but I genuinely like the members of DIYAH as people first since they are a great bunch of characters with a terrific sense of humour. After all, we all like headphones, so we must have something in common apart from being slightly nutty!! Jellofund went and bought a Nighthawk headphone and then sent it out to some of us to try. That just shows the level of trust that we have for each other and it's something that never ceases to surprise me if I'm honest.

if they come down to £350 i may go for it. (on interest free credit, that is) hoping to shift the d600 soon and have some birthday money left too. still fancying a Polaris, just bought the d2000 and hd650 (from you Ian), it soon adds up, but i cant resist a bargain. wont go for used though on these now(dt1770) as there are some qc issues and i dont want to inherit a dud!

I'm watching so many headphones that it's become a race ..... Who's coming down first!!!
I'm having some serious bass fun with the new T50. A simple mod makes it become something quite different. Very impressive. You know, it can produce more bass than a dt770 I reckon, if you want to tune it that way. It had too much even for me so I had to tone it down.
Trouble is, there are so many that I just want to try tbh.

The DT1770 looks nice no doubt, but such an incremental upgrade in sound is hardly worth 300 bucks extra, I think there are better options in the price range like the newer Fostex phones.

Those go down to 350 USD nowadays, but I'd rather get the T50RPmk3 and some pads that work. There's also the upcoming TH610 that's like the Massdrop TH-X00 with more premium wood and detachable cables. Tyll is also very happy with the ~300 USD bling-y Meze 99 Classic.
