It's just that the industry & people's lives have developed in such a way that we'll probably never see another icon as such. There's a mass of artists out there with bags more talent than some of those icons who have recently passed away. You've put it in a nutshell. That's exactly the point. What makes me pessimistic is the majority of the people, the listeners. It's a generalisation and by definition not fair to everyone (please excuse; it's not my intention to offend someone): The bulk of todays people is superficial and quite stupid. More exactly, I mean the smartphone and five minutes of honour generation. I see it here in Switzerland and IMVHO it's a shame. The music industry is well aware of this generation and they deliver what is ordered. Of course, there are exceptions. I think the overall impression is spot on though. But hope dies last. I like it dark and morbid. I'm listening to Dark Ambient not for nothing. I listened also to what I've found on YouTube. IMO "Blackstar" is excellent. It's almost as perfect as some Yello songs (while it is otherwise completely different): I always have my focus more on the music and to a lesser extent to the lyrics. Therefore it was helpful to see the video with the lyrics. "Lazarus" was the song mentioned mainly in the Swiss press and many commentators have found it "excellent". It's also good, but "Blackstar" matches my taste much better. Yes. It needs its time to understand and appreciate music. We all have a different (music) taste and our taste is the result of our own experiences. Taste is not static. It changes continuously while the changes come (most often) in small steps. The "At The Moment I'm Listening To..." thread and it's older counterpart on RG has broadened my music horizon. I've had a rather narrow focus before I got part of RG and now of DIYAH. Maybe I'll get also "Blackstar". I can afford an album and my Sonata CD player will be happy to get it into its mouth...

Yes it is. I echo that Gordon.
The problem for the artists is that if they produced what they wanted to, they might not sell enough to make a living, so most bow down to what the public wants.
Bowie didn't need to. After all, he couldn't take it with him so he produced it as a personal project I guess, regardless of the audience. That may account for some finding it a difficult listen. I find it a difficult listen because emotionally, it's packed with depression and horror plus images of death.
I always try to listen to words. It's a giveaway as to what the music is about.
Actually I agree with what you said Gordon. There are some brilliant musicians around today and those old icons, now they're going were from a generation that saw early rock in, without the technology that artists have today as well. So their music tends to be slightly 'cruder' in many casees I guess.

It's very rare that we hear anything that's genuinely new these days but that's not the fault of today's musicians. There's only so many notes in the scale after all and the automobile was only invented once.

Reminds me of Eric Morecambe and Andre Previn.
He played a jumble of notes and said to Previn, 'It's the right notes, but in the wrong order.'
It might be this sketch;
Not to forget the wonderful Victor Borge
