Hi Frans, Having a read on HF it seems that at, or around, the time Hifiman switched to using 2.5mm connectors (from SMC) they also made a 'stealth' revision whereby they ditched the 400i's backplate. The main HE-400i thread is so vast that I'm struggling to find a great deal about whether this audibly or measurably changes things or not, although have seen some (subjective) posts suggesting the revised version does sound more open and perhaps a bit clearer. Might be worth erring on the side of caution and adding a brief mention to the first post? This thread has some pics of the innards if you're interested in a look.

Those SMC connectors a real pain...
They are used a lot in the professional communications world though as they cater for a small form factor and thin coax cables.

You'd think they'd send a mini spanner out with the headphone!

I think they came up with a better solution....started using 2.5mm jacks! tbh they wouldn't be too bad if it was possible to tighten them up using both thumb & forefinger, which I suspect is how it works in pro applications. The problem with the HFM is the male connector sits in a small recess in the ear cup so you have to rather ineffectively rub your forefinger over the locking nut in the hope it tightens sufficiently...or at least doesn't fall right back off again

What are the chances of getting driver flex on these things? When I'm wearing them and press the earcups against my head - or even press the earcups together - I'll get a clicking noise from the left side, and a kind of crinkly/tape peeling noise from the right. A quick msg I got from HFM said it was pretty unlikely. I first stumbled across this a few days ago when I tried putting a pair of HM5 pleather earpads on the phones. With these pads the noises were quite severe - to the point that any head movement would cause it. When I pressed the earcups to my head, I can feel pressure in my earcanals, so it seems like they're sealing too good. I would expect the cups are open enough to vent the pressure out the back though. With the HM5 velour pads (and the stock for that matter) I will still get the noise - no pressure, but only when I press on the earcups. As far as I can tell the noise has nothing to do with how the earpads are attached (I've had them off and on a few times now) and it sounds like it is coming from inside the cups (I have a half-assed video I can upload if anybody wants to check). I've contacted HFM and the dealer to see what they think and if anything can be done - luckily enough the 1 year of purchase was yesterday

It doesn't look like the HE400 has any air pressure equalization holes. A change in air pressure will thus result in a different position of the membrane.
Possibly why the pads are so stiff. With stiff pads there aren't many pressure changes and maybe there could be potential small leaks.
The HM5 pleather pads also don't leak air and are very soft and compressible. Comfortable for sure. Also these pads feel kind of 'sucky' on closed baffles. These facts probably make the effect much worse.

The membrane itself is circular and expands beyond the foam sealing ring. Squiqgly parts is the 'voicecoil' which is only present near the magnets. The magnet array is rectangular. No air can pass the driver nor the foam ring which is a gasket rather than anything else. This picture shows it a bit more clearly:
