The popping and sizzling is like the 1940s version of hip dubstep sounds. Not as popular as it once was when wireless meant something far away and exotic rather than a flaky wifi router 5 feet across the room that keeps dropping the connection. Mention 12SN7 on purpose? That wouldn't be polite - probably just a lucky coincidence or something. Good to hear your rig is coming together with the sonic promise that we, but mainly, Frans, promised and has passed the most rigorous objective subjective test known to men (married men) - the wife listening test. I remember fondly that night when my NOS RCA 12SX7 had warmed up and biased itself to perfection in the Solstice, slipped the phones over my wife's ever-so-sensitive ears. The sweet sonic details flowed lavishly like a river of vintage electrons across the 12SX7's perfectly formed plates and kissed Mrs Lobal's lobes with the most exquisite rendering of Bach's Cello Suite No.1 she'd ever heard - her face glowed in bliss, basking in the luxuriant incandescence of pristine NOS 12SX7 cathodes. As she took the phones off, her eyes as large as 12SN7 micas, she said she'd married the smartest, most aurally astute man in the world. I nodded vacantly and asked for the phones back so I could get back to scrutinizing Frans' Exclusive 12SN7 Sweep Tones Anthology - the 1.25Khz to 2.1Khz Utrecht Extended Edition.

Waiting for someone to tell me how wrong I am - you all are so polite! What kind of forum is this? What I love about this place is that it`s a kind of peaceful haven that just doesn`t have the agression and egos that some sites have. Then again, I might be biased because I`m part of admin. The oldest part, as well!!!!

Very nice how you managed to rub the 12*N7 in just a few more times - "her eyes as large as 12SN7 micas" is poetic, but cruel nonetheless. And of course the way your Solstice "biased itself to perfection", reminding me that I must hunch in the semi-dark, squinting through my reading glasses, as I try to line up my tiny screwdriver with the tiny, tiny slot in the tiny bias screw. You, sir, are not so civil as you appear!

Reminds of the time I had the Horizon perfectly biased with a 12BH7 glowing in the dark like a new born nebula. I gently slipped my HD 800’s, being correctly corrected by the Kameleon with its blue light looking like a super blue giant star, over my wife’s ears. She grabbed them, throwing them across the room, the headband clipping the off switch on the Kameleon. With a now distorted sounding Natalie Merchant screaching San Andreas into the room, my wife looked at me and said “what in the hell are you doing? I’m trying to watch Antiques Roadshow!”

Big mistake! You absolutely have to wait for HER to come to YOU. The more I acted like this was something she could never understand or appreciate, the more intrigued my wife was. It took two months.

I took some poetic license there. My wife doesn’t like how any headphones feel over/on her ears. She loves my speaker system. Not the price, the sound. I just play something I know she likes and if she’s in the mood for music she’ll come in and have a listen. The Antiques Roadshow part is true. 32 years and counting.

I don't even own a Horizon, but I keep poking my head out from the swamp to read this thread. You guys are very entertaining! No such love in the seemingly abandoned and forlorn Starlight thread.
Carry on!

Carry on! marveltone: At least you have a little light in the Starlight. Seems to always be the darkest night of year in the Solstice thread. Maybe we could start a G1217 sibling rivalry thread where we could swap tube tips and amp barbs.

This is definitely not the time of year to visit the Solstice thread. Please drop in here anytime, and bring your friends. I'm happy to see this Horizon thread flourishing!
Ronzo, my wife doesn't like the headphones because she says they press her hair down around her ears... Not a problem for me, although they sometimes tickle the hair growing IN my ears.

Erm, I am thinking of getting a Project Horizon as a spare amp just for something a bit different compared to the Ember
Aside from topology differences and having to bias manually (I don't mind since that can give me a good clue into the longevity of the tube), what other differences should I get used to?
I will be using HD600/HD650 (300 Ohm) and beyerdynamic CUSTOM series headphones (16 to 80 Ohm) and maybe Focal's stuff, alongside with my JBL LSR 305 (1st Gen)

other differences are: Less suited for low impedance headphones (think 32 Ohm and lower)and having to set the heater voltage yourself. You can't blow up heaters/tubes when doing this wrong but one channel may not work or tubes may be hard to bias in the wrong position.

Will an inline volume attenuator be useful for the low impedance headphones (I have one)?

The G1217 adapter is already a 32 Ohm load. The ifi one is even half of that. The Sunrise would be better suited as an alternative.

I see, I checked the website again but I will like to confirm the following: 1. Since Sunrise and Horizon are using the same topology, do they sound similar to each other? Or rather, is Sunrise the same as Horizon but just 16 Ohm to 300 Ohm? 2. I see that 300 Ohm headphones can be used with either the Sunrise or Horizon. Which will be better for these headphones? 3. For 600 Ohm headphones, how should I make the Sunrise usable with them? 4. Can I build/use an attenuator that has more than 32 Ohm load for using sensitive headphones with the Horizon instead?
