A few of you may recall my main music source is a hard-disc-based library streamed through a Squeezebox Touch. It works well and rarely crashes. And it's used wirlessly in my house; even 24/192 material is reliable over wi-fi so I've not had to bother with ethernet, which is handy and practical.
Recently I've been overhauling my system so that it's high quality but with fewer 'boxes' and easier to use and maintain. Now I'm in my very early 60s I want something to 'see me out' as they say. I've tackled speakers, amps and DACs... now how about that source?
OK, move over Squeezebox. My main source is now, since yesterday, the Oppo BD-103D. It is a DNLA streamer, it's a CD player, it does 3D BluRay, SACD and DVD-A. So I can have streamed music or I can still poke in a disc and press 'play'. I use it co-ax out into my Benchmark DAC2. Fabulous it all is :-)
However, the Oppo BD-103 has the facilty to play from USB-attached drives. So I plug in my Samsung USB-powered portable hard drive and off we go. No wi-fi, no cables.
I think the way I'm likely to go is to manage my music libray, day to day, on my laptop, as it has a big ol' 2TB hard drive on board. I'll do my downloads, deletions, file and library managment and security backups with the laptop and then periodically synch the laptop's library to the drive that's plugged into the Oppo. Seems less bother than having to ensure a PC is switched before I can ever play music. Plus my wife will have half a chance of being able to use it :-)
I think the combination of a straightforward mulit-format disc player plus an attached library USB disc is the way to go. Vidoes and photos can live on the disc too.
Simples.
