Oh, ok. I just presumed that Exfat being an update of fat32 would cure it!! Didn't realise that some players won't work properly with it. Shame that Windows left it out in favour of Exfat really. They could have left the option there.
Thanks for your help.
Update
Just found some info that might help everyone .....
FORMAT THE CARD IN THE PLAYER!!!!!
Once I did that, checking its properties of the card on the computer showed FAT32.
So I'll load music on and see what happens!!!
The cards came pre formatted so were probably in exfat.

FiiO recommends to do the formatting by the player itself.

I presumed that the cards had been pre formatted in fat32 Frans, when in fact, it's been updated to exfat, which is compatible up to a point. The Fiio player cards must be in fat32 it seems, but Windows 10 doesn't offer that. I'd not realised that Windows had updated the formatting options. Fat32 was still included with Windows 8.
Since everything worked until I hit a FLAC 24/192 file, I presumed all was ok. It seems that exfat works in Fiios if you play MP3.
I think all players recommend formatting on the player if it's available, but Windows formatting was just as good until Windows 10 it seems. I used to reformat cards to refill by habit on the computer, since it wasn't an issue.
It also seems more critical with big cards.

In the linked thread FiiO mentions this:
Hi, yes, it is suggested to format it in your x3 2nd gen first. If this can't help, pls change another micro sd card to test. Sandisk or Kinston card will be better.
Still, it may be possible the card read speed isn't up to snuff or not read by FiiO on the max speed. Of course when decoding FLAC some of the clockpulses go into decoding (expanding back to WAV) the file before sending it off to its DAC.
Sandisk has ultra cards rated class 10 but in 2 speeds. 30MB/s and 48MB/s they even have cards up to 95MB/s (the extreme series)

The reformatted card also plays up. 64Gb cards play the same file fine, so it has to be the card then. I've just realised that they are Samsung cards not Sandisk and looking on Amazon reviews is interesting in the. 1, 2 and 3 star ratings. Mentions of fakes and slow speeds. That could be why I have a problem....... My 64gb read at up to 80 mbps so they're very fast. You want some free cards Frans? 320 MP3 is fine on them!! www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Memory-MicroSDXC-UHS-I-Adapter/dp/B00WR0HIR4/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

It says 48MB/s for Samsung but the disclaimer says 'max speed' and depends on the UHS-I interface being used. Most likely the FiiO has a lower speed HS interface.
I have max 96/24 FLAC on my player (but on 8GB internal memory, not on external). Also some 24/44 and 24/48. 99% is 320kb mpoop3 though... simply because in all the tests I did to myself I can't hear a difference or it isn't worth a 10x bigger file size to me. Most MP3 is high definition (24 bit) but AFAIK the FiiO's don't support hires MP3. (sounds weird doesn't it... hi-res MP3.. yet it exists and beats CD quality) Little players do support it but like to encode in 24 bits anyway.
Don't need to be free Ian... and need only 1
I am glad FiiO lifted the 8.500 song limit by the way. Doesn't it take ages for a 128Gb card to be indexed by the FiiO. The 64GB I have takes a few minutes already.

That's a good idea .... Stick the big files on the internal memory. Should have tried that in the first place!!
You always treat me well Frans, so let me do the same.
I got them originally for dsd and Hi res stuff. With MP3, you'll get masses onto cards that size!!!!
Oh well. Lesson learned. Check the speed of the blasted things first!!!!
I agree, it's better with the 8,500 limit raised, but not sure it gets everything over a certain number. I have not been able to find things on the search, but browsed and it was there all the time!!! I find the browse easier than that listing system TBH,

Cool. Glad it works now. I think the iBasso didn't really format the microsd when I tried. It just deleted all files.
Edit: Oops. Missed that it still acts up. You can check the format in windows again. Might still be exfat coz my iBasso didn't change it to fat32 which was why I had to ! manually format the microsd.

I have a Patriot 128gb card and never had any issues playing up to 24/192 in my X3 (although I mostly never bother keeping the files at that resolution). Class 10/uhs-1 should be way more than fast enough for those type of files. Formatting the card in the Fiio is the best advice. One of the firmware updates also added NTFS (maybe exfat too) support but I've never tried that. Besides you need to use fat32 to do any firmware updates. I currently have just under 5000 tracks on my 128gb file and a database update is still only a couple minutes. I keep the tracks as a nice mix of flac and aac - I figure if a song has a DR rating of less than 10 is really doesn't need to be lossless.

Mine were working in exfat so I did try reformatting to FAT32. Both the X3 and X5 were playing up with high resolution files and I learned something ...... They're not all running at the same speed!!!
My 64gb cards run at 80 but the Samsungs run at probably half of that. They're fine with mo3 and 'almost' play high res FLAC. I bought them for big files though so they're defunct as far as I'm concerned. Got too many dsd and hi res files to play and they just won't run them.
Interesting that speeds weren't published on the Amazon site. It was Frans who found out the actual speed that they will work at top whack, which isn't enough for what I'm trying to play on them. They are labelled as class 10 as well so I'm not sure what the minimum speed is supposed to be.
Still, there's a lesson there ...... Check the speed of the cards and don't just rely on the 'class' published, I guess. There is also a conversion going on in the Fiio with DSD. It's converted to PCM AFAIK. So there's all kinds of things going on and the last thing needed is a 'blockage' in data flow from the card itself.
No big deal for me. I have everything on 64Gb cards but that means double the number which is a bit of a nuisance.
The Fiio format is WAY faster than a computer, so it's best to do them in the machine. I used to make a habit of formatting before reloading cards, but ai won't be doing that too often now!!

Got a Sandisk 128gb which quotes speeds up to 80mps. (Or is it miles per gallon? ) So far, it's working fine. Looks like I may have found the answer!! I'm nervous of the blasted things now .....

The new one that I got is quoted up to 80 so that seems fine. Some manufacturers are a little bit naughty in that they're not quoting the speed although they're advertised as class 10. I learned a lesson ..... Read the specs because not all cards are the same!! At first, after what I read here about cards holding their memories in the heat, I wondered whether the Florida weather had done mine in. The two 128gb cards came with me so I assumed that perhaps the heat had compromised them. There also seems to be a race to get the prices down but that seems to incorporate a drop in specs with some of them. I can't get that link to work Frans.
