The later filter is based on measurements and hearing. The first iteration (Rock Grotto) was based on hearing only. I recommend to build the latest version. At least the inductors are the same. I'll probably build the old one first to get used on soldering. Haven't done that for ages. I successfully replaced my 681B cable with a detachable one from broken 668Bs, though. I've pondered about getting normal 681s since the bass isn't very fun in 681Bs.
Also, I can't seem to find appropriate parts for the latest iteration. If you have spare, hit me up.

I have some inductors lying around and 470nF caps as well as resistors.
Can't help with the 47uF electrolyrics nor the 680nF caps.

Did a 2 plies of toilet paper and taping 4 of 6 holes shut thing on my 681B while waiting for my 662 evos. I find the sound more fun now.
It would be interesting to see how it affects the frequency chart.

I don't have a 681B alas, only a modified HD681 and modified HD681EVO.

yes, the treble will be much the same. 2 plies of toilet paper has about the same effect as 3mm felt.
Closing some holes will have a different effect on the HD681 and on the B version though.

By the way ... When you have a low impedance amplifier you can build this filter:

I had a pre-2018 HD681 laying around, which I never quite used since I found them a bit harsh in the treble. For fun, I decided to fit the stock ear pads of my Superlux HD669 and apply 1 ply of 2 ply tissue paper underneath the foam inserts. From my perspective, it doesn’t sound as harsh in the treble anymore; I don’t know if I’d call the treble faked detail anymore - transients and decay appear to be there and remind me of my stock HD598. I have a Grado MS2 , AKG K500 and K501, and those three sound like they have faked upper treble. The soundstage seems wider with these pads; they are thicker and have a slightly smaller diameter in the opening compared to the HD681. Midrange and bass are still there in good amounts, not cuppy or boomy sounding.
Thomann doesn’t appear to sell these pads separately unfortunately. I might not have searched hard enough.

Hi Frans, I would like to thank you first for your great support in the last few days. Without your help i would´nt finished my first real mini diy project My 681 is now running with your standard notch high and low filter, combined with a pair of Brainwavz XL Velour Pads. Sounds great. Maybe the soundstage is a little bit tooo wide. Maybe i will order the AKG pads.
EDIT: AKG velvet pads arrived today and i have to say, they sound so much better with these! low frequences still too much for my taste. Will build another filter with pots. best regards, Rini

Superlux HD681 (pre 2018 model) with Superlux HD662-EVO earpads and 6 plies of paper towel. Measured using MiniDSP EARS with HEQ compensation. Imo, has a balanced sound overall with very good bass extension, warm mids, soundstage isn’t particularly big no small, good treble extension (doesn’t have the steeliness/tizziness sound of the stock pads, specifically in instruments such as cymbals). My stock Focal Clear, stock Sennheiser HD800 with worn earpads, and stock Superlux HD681 measurements overlaid alongside modded Superlux HD681.
