During the early 1830's there was a ballad flying around about a veteran from the Waterloo battles who lost his arm. In those days, ballads were kind of like a newspaper and many stories (Like Matty Groves) were spread around pubs via ballads sung by often travelling musicians. The words to ballads are very important.
I love the rehashes of these old ballads that are often done by folk bands like Fairport Convention, but this one was recorded by 'Blackbeard's Tea Party' who have produced some terrific albums but sadly have disbanded now.
This is Steam Iron Man performed live. There is no studio recording of it available on the internet, but I really like the album that it comes from - Reprobates.
